Fatal Greyhound bus crash in Illinois leaves 3 dead and multiple injured

13:07 13.07.2023

Tragedy struck early Wednesday morning as a Greyhound passenger bus crashed into three tractor-trailers parked along an exit ramp to a rest area on Interstate 70 in southern Illinois. The incident, which occurred around 1:55 am, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left at least 14 others seriously injured. According to Illinois State Police, the St. Louis-bound bus was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in Madison County when it collided with the three semis. The initial investigation revealed that the Greyhound bus struck the commercial vehicles parked on the exit ramp to the Silver Lake Interstate 70 westbound rest area. State police spokesperson Melaney Arnold confirmed that all those who lost their lives and sustained injuries were passengers on the Greyhound bus. The identities of the deceased and injured individuals have not been disclosed by authorities. Greyhound, in a statement, identified the bus involved in the crash as schedule number 1675, traveling from Indianapolis to St. Louis. The company expressed concern for the well-being of their passengers and driver, stating that multiple individuals had been transported to the hospital. Greyhound also assured cooperation with local authorities and the provision of a relief bus for unaffected passengers. Photos and TV footage captured the devastating aftermath of the collision, with the side of the bus peeled open and its roof crumpled. The crash led to the closure of westbound lanes and a ramp to the rest area until approximately noon on Wednesday, as reported by state police. Greyhound spokesperson Mike Ogulnick informed The Associated Press that the bus was expected to arrive in St. Louis around 2:20 am and was carrying approximately 30 people, including the driver. Another bus was promptly dispatched to transport passengers who did not sustain injuries. While it is illegal for trucks to park on exit ramps in Illinois, experts in the trucking industry claim that tractor-trailers often utilize these areas due to the scarcity of overnight parking at rest stops and truck stops. As investigations into the crash continue, the focus remains on caring for the injured individuals and supporting those affected by this tragic incident.
