One person has been killed and over 40 people have been injured in a tragic bus accident in New York state. The incident occurred on Interstate 84 in Wawayanda, approximately 75 miles northwest of New York City. New York State Police announced the accident investigation on social media, stating that the westbound road was closed at exit 15. The bus, which was carrying mostly young passengers, rolled over, resulting in multiple injuries.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus revealed that as many as 46 people were injured, with five of them in critical condition. Unfortunately, one person has died. It has been confirmed that the bus was transporting students from the Farmingdale School District on Long Island who were on their way to a band camp in Pennsylvania.

The crash has caused authorities to close the westbound side of Interstate 84 at exit 15A, with detours in place. State police have stated that the closure is expected to last for several hours. New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, stating that "our hearts are with all who are impacted by this horrific situation." She has directed personnel from the New York State Police and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to assist local emergency response teams.

Senator Chuck Schumer, a representative from New York, also expressed his concern and support for those involved in the accident. He assured that he is closely monitoring the developments and keeping the students, passengers, families, and first responders in his thoughts and prayers.

Aerial footage of the scene showcased a charter bus on its side at the bottom of a steep median, which divides the interstate. Ambulances and firetrucks were visible along the roadway, indicating the scale of the incident. The crash occurred near the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey in Orange County, New York.

The deceased individual is reported to be an adult, according to an unnamed source familiar with the situation. While official details are limited, it has been confirmed that the bus was carrying members of a high school band from Farmingdale, New York. The band members were en route to a band camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania. The Farmingdale School District released a statement acknowledging the accident and stated that police, emergency responders, and district administration were on the scene.

Rescue authorities in Orange County referred to the incident as a "bus rollover" and a "mass casualty" incident. They have not provided further details at this time. The bus involved in the crash had a logo for Regency Buses, a regional bus line serving New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The injured individuals are primarily young people, with five of them in critical condition and being treated at Westchester Medical Center. Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano revealed that the bus was part of a six-bus caravan heading to Greeley. The section of Interstate 84 where the crash occurred is not typically considered a hazardous area, although it does experience heavy traffic from tractor-trailers. The band camp was scheduled to run until Sunday.

The SUNY Orange campus in Middletown has announced that its phys ed center will serve as a family reunification hub for those affected by the accident. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to be released. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as they become available.
