Mitchell Robinson and HS coach form unlikely roommates, unite in emotional journey

03:25 01.12.2023

In a heartwarming story that exemplifies the power of friendship and compassion, NBA player Mitchell Robinson has taken in his former high school basketball coach, Butch Stockton, as his roommate in New York City. Stockton, who coached Robinson at Chalmette High School in Louisiana, lost his beloved wife, Dawn, to metastatic cancer in September. In the midst of this tragedy, Robinson extended an incredible act of kindness by inviting Stockton to live with him and start anew in the Big Apple.

The bond between Robinson and Stockton has been unwavering since their time together at Chalmette High School. During Dawn's hospitalization, Robinson was a constant presence, visiting her every day and forming a deep connection with both Stockton and his wife. Following Dawn's funeral, Robinson made a heartfelt promise to bring Stockton to New York to help him heal from the profound loss. "Coach, there's no reason for you to stay down here in Louisiana anymore. Come to New York with me, enjoy yourself, and find solace in knowing how much you loved your wife," Robinson told Stockton.

True to his word, Robinson has provided not only a place to live for Stockton but also a source of comfort and support during this difficult time. The two have been living together since September, with plans for Stockton to remain as Robinson's roommate for the entire NBA season. Reflecting on the situation, Stockton expressed his gratitude, stating, "It's just been a great situation, to be honest with you."

The remarkable story of Robinson and Stockton has garnered attention from all corners, including Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, who commended the arrangement. Thibodeau expressed his admiration for Stockton and praised the positive impact he has had on Robinson's life. "Everything I've heard about [Stockton], I just think it's great. I think it's great for Mitch. I'm excited that that's happening," Thibodeau remarked.

For Robinson, this act of kindness is a way to repay Stockton for the invaluable role he played in shaping his basketball career. Describing Stockton as a caring individual, Robinson expressed his gratitude, stating, "Bringing him along with me after everything that happened in the summer... I can help him out like he helped me. It's the least that I can do. It's been cool."

Stockton, a highly respected figure in the basketball community and a member of the Louisiana High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, spoke glowingly about Robinson's character. Their friendship began when Robinson relocated to New Orleans before his 11th-grade year, and Stockton, having received a tip about a tall young man in the neighborhood, took an interest in him. Their bond grew from there, and Stockton couldn't thank Robinson enough for his generosity. "I can't thank Mitchell enough, and I'll be honest with you, I've really enjoyed it up here. Especially staying at Mitchell's house. Like another roommate, I guess," Stockton shared.

As the two navigate life together in New York City, they have found solace in each other's company. They have spent evenings watching Christmas movies and Stockton has been lending a helping hand in looking after Robinson's dogs. This heartwarming tale serves as a reminder of the power of human connection and the impact one person can have on another during times of adversity. Through their unwavering friendship, Robinson and Stockton are proving that compassion and support can make a significant difference in someone's life.
