Oklahoma City Zoo Welcomes Adorable African Painted Dog Pups

16:09 11.12.2023

In a major breakthrough for animal conservationists, the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden has announced the birth of six adorable African painted dog pups. The arrival of these rare pups brings hope for the species, which has been experiencing a rapid decline over the past decade. The new additions were born to first-time mother Pele on November 5 and 6, marking a significant step towards conserving the endangered species.

The African painted dog population has dramatically decreased from approximately 11,800 in 2010 to a mere 5,000 left in the wild in 2022. The species is struggling to survive due to the effects of climate change, which make it increasingly difficult for young pups to keep up with their packs in scorching conditions. This alarming situation has prompted the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to highlight the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Tyler Boyd, the Zoo's Curator of Carnivores, expressed his excitement over the birth of the African painted dog puppies. He emphasized the significance of every birth at the Oklahoma City Zoo, especially since this is the first litter of African painted dog pups in the Predator Pass Habitat since its opening in 2021 and the first at the Zoo since 2016. The zoo staff is currently focused on allowing the mother and her pups to bond behind the scenes, a crucial factor in their future success.

Pele is spending quality time with her new additions in their den, while caretakers closely monitor the pack through advanced monitoring equipment. The caretakers have observed the pups nursing regularly, which is a positive sign indicating their good health and well-being. Once the entire painted dog pack has bonded, the zoo's veterinary and animal care teams will conduct wellness exams on the pups. During these exams, the sex of each pup will be determined, and they will receive vital vaccinations, ensuring their continued health.

Mr. Boyd highlighted the Oklahoma City Zoo's commitment to African painted dog conservation, both within the zoo and in the wild. By supporting specific conservation programs for this species, the zoo aims to raise awareness among its guests while actively contributing to the preservation of the African painted dogs throughout their natural range. This dedication plays a crucial role in saving the species from extinction.

The sociability of African painted dogs is an essential aspect of their survival. Pele, a three-year-old female, arrived at the zoo in October 2021 and has been living with other African painted dogs, fostering a sense of community among the animals. These dogs typically live in groups ranging from two to 40 individuals, with a complex hierarchy dominated by an alpha male and an alpha female. However, the dynamics within the pack can change due to the age and health of the leaders.

The Oklahoma City Zoo has been dedicated to the care of African painted dogs since 1972 and currently houses nine of these magnificent creatures. In the wild, African painted dogs have an average lifespan of seven to nine years. They are primarily found in countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, and South Africa, according to the Painted Dog Conservation.

The birth of these six African painted dog pups brings hope for a species on the brink of extinction. Through their continued efforts, the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is playing a vital role in the preservation of these remarkable creatures, ensuring a brighter future for African painted dogs.
