Paula Abdul files lawsuit alleging sexual assault by former "American Idol" producer

02:29 31.12.2023

In a shocking turn of events, renowned director and producer Nigel Lythgoe has been accused of sexual assault by Paula Abdul, his former colleague and co-star. The allegations have sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, tarnishing the reputation of a man who was once highly regarded in his field.

The disturbing revelations came to light during a 2015 interview with the Daily Beast, where Lythgoe made a shocking remark about wanting to be the next person to abuse Abdul. The two were discussing Abdul's tumultuous relationship with Simon Cowell during their time on "American Idol." Lythgoe claimed that Cowell had "abused and mistreated" Abdul during their on-air bickering, which was often caught by the cameras.

During the interview, Lythgoe expressed his admiration for Abdul, stating that he had been a fan of hers even before coming to the United States. He spoke about the privilege of working with her on Idol and witnessing firsthand how she was mistreated by Cowell. However, Abdul interrupted their conversation with a playful groan, dismissing his claims as mere banter.

Little did the public know at the time that Lythgoe's alleged mistreatment of Abdul went far beyond playful banter. In a recent lawsuit filed against him in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Abdul detailed two incidents of assault that occurred before the 2015 interview. According to court documents, Lythgoe shoved Abdul against a wall in a hotel elevator, forcibly touched her genitals and breasts, and forcefully kissed her, shoving his tongue down her throat.

The second incident, which took place in 2014, allegedly occurred after a dinner at Lythgoe's house. Abdul claims that he made unwelcome advances towards her, suggesting that they would make a powerful couple. These shocking allegations were further compounded by Abdul's accusation that Lythgoe groped her assistant in 2015.

Abdul's attorney, Douglas Johnson, released a statement affirming the difficulty of Abdul's decision to come forward but emphasizing her determination to seek justice. Johnson stated, "It was clearly a difficult decision to make, but Ms. Abdul knows that she stands both in the shoes and on the shoulders of many other similarly situated survivors, and she is determined to see that justice is done."

In response to the allegations, Lythgoe vehemently denied any wrongdoing, calling the accusations false and deeply offensive. This denial sets the stage for a legal battle that will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for both Lythgoe and Abdul.

The entertainment industry has been rocked by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years, with the #MeToo movement shedding light on the pervasive nature of abuse and harassment. Abdul's decision to come forward adds her voice to the chorus of survivors seeking justice and holding their abusers accountable.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder that even those who hold positions of power and influence are not immune to allegations of sexual assault. The outcome of this lawsuit will undoubtedly have a significant impact on both Lythgoe's career and the broader conversation surrounding consent and accountability in the entertainment industry.
