Republican WV delegate Caleb Hanna resigns to focus on state auditor campaign

17:43 02.01.2024

In a surprising move, 24-year-old Republican state lawmaker, Del. Caleb Hanna of Nicholas County, has announced his resignation from the West Virginia state Legislature. Hanna, who was first elected to office in 2018 at the age of 19, made history as the youngest African American ever elected to state office in West Virginia. However, he has decided to step down from his position in order to focus on his campaign for state auditor.

In a heartfelt letter announcing his resignation, which will take effect on Wednesday, a week before the start of the legislative session on January 10th, Hanna expressed his desire to dedicate his "full attention and efforts" to his campaign. He believes that the role of state auditor offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the financial well-being and transparency of the state government.

Hanna emphasized the importance of serving the people of West Virginia effectively in his letter, stating that he needs to devote his time and energy to meeting with constituents, understanding their concerns, and working towards solutions that benefit the state. By resigning from his current position, he hopes to fully commit himself to his campaign and ensure that he can make a difference in his new role as state auditor.

According to state law, the responsibility of appointing a Republican to finish the remainder of Hanna's term, which expires in December 2024, falls on GOP Governor Jim Justice. Hanna's local GOP executive committee will submit a list of names for the governor to choose from, ensuring that the vacancy left by Hanna's resignation will be filled by a qualified and capable individual.

Hanna's decision to resign and focus on his campaign has garnered attention not only due to his young age but also because of his historic achievement as the youngest African American to hold state office in West Virginia. If successful in his bid for state auditor, Hanna could further solidify his place in history as the youngest African American to achieve such a position.

As West Virginia prepares for the upcoming legislative session, the political landscape is set to undergo changes with the departure of Del. Caleb Hanna. All eyes will be on the governor's selection to fill the vacant seat, as well as the progress of Hanna's campaign for state auditor. The impact of his resignation and future endeavors will undoubtedly be closely watched by the people of West Virginia, who have witnessed the rise of a young and trailblazing politician in their state.
