Fans at Frigid Chiefs Game Forced into Amputations, Hospital Confirms

16:12 10.03.2024

At least 12 football fans who attended the Kansas City Chiefs playoff game in January suffered extreme frostbite and had to undergo amputations, according to a hospital official. The game, which took place on January 13 at Arrowhead Stadium, saw the Chiefs defeat the Miami Dolphins with a temperature of minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind chill of minus 27 degrees Fahrenheit. The Grossman Burn Center in Kansas City treated a total of 30 patients for frostbite following the game, with more surgeries expected in the coming weeks as injuries evolve.

The hospital did not provide exact numbers, but stated that some of the amputations involved mostly fingers and toes. The University of Kansas hospital also treated frostbite victims from the game but did not report any amputations. The frigid weather conditions at the game shattered the record for the coldest game in Arrowhead Stadium history, with wind gusts creating a windchill of minus 33 degrees Celsius.

Despite the extreme cold, the game went on as scheduled, unlike the Buffalo Bills' game against the Pittsburgh Steelers which was postponed due to a blizzard. Fans were allowed to bring heated blankets and cardboard to keep warm during the game. The Chief's game is now remembered not only for the final score but also for the dangerous weather conditions that led to severe frostbite among attendees.

The hospital emphasized that not all cases of frostbite were directly related to the game, as some patients had other exposures that contributed to their injuries. The game was notable for its frigid temperatures and was attended by celebrities like Taylor Swift, who watched from a luxury suite. Despite the harsh conditions, the Kansas City Fire Department only transported 15 fans to hospitals that evening, with 10 showing cold-related symptoms. The game is now ranked as the fourth coldest football game in NFL history, with the legendary Ice Bowl of 1967 still holding the record for the coldest game ever played.
