Trump employees face charges in expanding US classified documents case

03:08 28.07.2023

Federal prosecutors have expanded their criminal case against former President Donald Trump, charging a second employee with aiding Trump in evading officials who were attempting to recover classified national security documents he took from the White House. Carlos De Oliveira, a maintenance worker at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, has been charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, making false statements, and destroying documents, according to Special Counsel Jack Smith. Media outlets have reported that De Oliveira helped hide the documents from officials who were trying to recover them. Trump pleaded guilty last month to federal charges related to the classified government documents and obstructing justice.

This comes after another Trump aide, Walt Nauta, was also charged earlier this month for assisting the former president in hiding the documents. Nauta pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, false statements, and withholding and concealing documents. The updated grand-jury indictment now includes additional obstruction counts against both Trump and Nauta, alleging that they, along with De Oliveira, attempted to suppress evidence by deleting surveillance footage from Mar-a-Lago.

In response to the new charges, Trump's campaign released a statement denouncing them as politically motivated attacks led by President Joe Biden. The statement referred to it as a "continued desperate and flailing attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their Department of Justice to harass President Trump and those around him."

Previously, Trump had pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges, including willfully retaining sensitive national security information, concealing them, and making false statements. The case is ongoing, with Trump's trial set for May 2024. In addition to this case, Trump is also facing a separate federal investigation into his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

In a related development, Trump's attorneys met with federal prosecutors at the special counsel's office in Washington, D.C., indicating the possibility of further criminal charges in the near future. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in both cases.
