Promising 17-year-old cyclist Magnus White tragically killed during training for world championships

Tragedy struck the cycling world over the weekend as Magnus White, a 17-year-old rising star in the sport, was fatally struck by a car while training in Boulder, Colorado. White, a member of the US Junior Men's National Team, was preparing for the Junior Men's Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships in Scotland next month.

Described as a "rising star in the off-road cycling scene," White's passion for the sport was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community, according to USA Cycling. The young cyclist had an impressive resume, including winning a junior 17-18 national championship in cyclocross in 2021 and earning a spot on the US national team. He had also competed in Europe ahead of last year's cyclocross world championships and was selected to represent the US again at this year's event in the Netherlands. White had recently ventured into road cycling and mountain biking this season.

The tragic incident occurred while White was riding south on the shoulder of Colorado State Highway 119. A 23-year-old Colorado woman driving a Toyota Matrix veered onto the shoulder from the right lane and struck White from behind, throwing him off his bike. The car then traveled off the road and crashed into a fence before coming to a stop. White, who was wearing a helmet, was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it remains unclear if criminal charges will be pursued. However, state authorities have stated that alcohol, drugs, and speeding were not believed to be factors in the incident.

White's untimely death has left his family, teammates, friends, and the Boulder community devastated. USA Cycling expressed their heartfelt condolences, saying, "We offer our heartfelt condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community during this incredibly difficult time."

The loss of Magnus White is yet another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by cyclists on the road. It comes in the wake of recent accidents that claimed the lives of young cyclists around the world. The cycling community mourns the loss of these promising athletes and continues to advocate for safer roads and increased awareness to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
