Judge Denies Trump's Attempt to Halt Georgia Election Investigation

03:14 01.08.2023

A Georgia judge has rejected former President Donald Trump's request to block a prosecutor from pursuing an indictment against him for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. Trump had claimed that the investigation led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was flawed and unconstitutional. However, Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled that Trump's claims were insufficient and speculative, stating that being the subject of a criminal investigation does not provide a basis for halting the investigation. McBurney also stated that Trump could raise legal challenges if he is indicted and when a judge is assigned to the case. Willis has indicated that she could soon indict Trump and his aides involved in his efforts to overturn the election. Trump focused his election challenges on several states, including Georgia, where he asked state officials to find him enough votes to win the state. Trump is already facing criminal indictments in two other cases and expects to be indicted in Georgia as well. Despite these legal challenges, polls show that Republican voters overwhelmingly support Trump for the party's 2024 presidential nomination. In another criminal case, Trump is accused of illegally retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He is also accused of trying to delete security camera footage of the documents being moved. A hearing on one of Trump's legal challenges is scheduled for August 10th in Cobb County, Georgia.
