Promising 17-Year-Old Cyclist Tragically Killed in World Championships Training

17:09 01.08.2023

In a devastating turn of events, the cycling world was struck by tragedy over the weekend as 17-year-old Magnus White, a rising star in the sport, was fatally struck by a car while training in Boulder, Colorado. White, a member of the US Junior Men's National Team, had been diligently preparing for the upcoming Junior Men's Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships in Scotland next month.

Described as a "rising star in the off-road cycling scene," White's passion for the sport was evident through his exceptional racing skills and his camaraderie with both his teammates and the local community, according to USA Cycling. With an impressive resume that boasted a junior 17-18 national championship in cyclocross in 2021 and a coveted spot on the US national team, White had already competed in Europe ahead of last year's cyclocross world championships. His talent had once again secured him a place to represent the US at this year's event in the Netherlands.

Not content with resting on his laurels, White had recently decided to venture into road cycling and mountain biking this season, broadening his horizons and showcasing his adaptability as an athlete. However, tragedy struck while White was training, riding south on the shoulder of Colorado State Highway 119.

A 23-year-old Colorado woman was driving a Toyota Matrix when she veered onto the shoulder from the right lane, colliding with White from behind and violently throwing him off his bike. The car continued off the road, crashing into a fence before coming to a halt. Despite wearing a helmet, White sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving the cycling community devastated.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and it remains uncertain if criminal charges will be pursued. However, state authorities have stated that alcohol, drugs, and speeding were not believed to be factors in the incident. The focus now lies on unraveling the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking accident.

White's untimely death has left his family, teammates, friends, and the Boulder community in a state of profound grief. USA Cycling expressed their heartfelt condolences, stating, "We offer our heartfelt condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community during this incredibly difficult time." The loss of Magnus White serves as yet another tragic reminder of the dangers that cyclists face on the road.

This devastating incident comes on the heels of recent accidents that have claimed the lives of young cyclists worldwide. As the cycling community mourns the loss of these promising athletes, there is an urgent need for safer roads and increased awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future. Advocacy for cyclist safety has become paramount, as the global cycling community rallies together to ensure that the roads become a safer space for riders of all ages and skill levels.
