Goldman Sachs analyst John Castic found dead in NYC waterway

15:07 02.08.2023

The body of a Goldman Sachs analyst, John Castic, was found in the waters of Newtown Creek on Tuesday, just a short distance from where he went missing. Castic, a 27-year-old Illinois native who lived in Lower Manhattan, had disappeared after leaving a concert at The Brooklyn Mirage in the early hours of Saturday morning. A passerby spotted his bloated, shirtless body floating face-down in the English Kills, a branch of the East River tributary, and immediately called the police. The body was later identified as Castic. According to police sources, there were no obvious signs of trauma apart from drowning.

Castic was remembered by his friends and colleagues as a charismatic and responsible individual. Sara Kostecka, a close friend, described him as an "amazing person" with a good sense of humor. Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO, David Solomon, expressed shock and sadness at Castic's passing and extended condolences to his family. Other friends recalled Castic as someone who was always quick with a smile and a joke, and who was loved by everyone who knew him.

This tragic incident brings attention to The Brooklyn Mirage, where both Castic and another man, Karl Clemente, went missing before being found dead in Newtown Creek. Clemente had been turned away from the venue on June 11 and his body was discovered a few days later. While authorities have not confirmed foul play in either case, concerns have been raised about the safety of the venue. The State Liquor Authority has previously raised concerns about drug use at the facility, and there have been reports of drug-related deaths among attendees.

The owner of The Brooklyn Mirage, Juergen Billy Bildstein, has defended his business, stating that it has been unfairly targeted by the State Liquor Authority. City councilwoman Jennifer Gutierrez has expressed her concerns about the safety of the area surrounding the venue, particularly after events when people are leaving. She has spoken with one of the venue's owners, who she says is troubled by the recent incidents.

The investigation into John Castic's death is still ongoing, and his cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. His family is devastated by the loss and described him as a smart individual who made a lapse in judgment. The connection between Castic's death and the death of Karl Clemente remains unclear, but Clemente's father believes there may be some link and suspects foul play. The investigation into Clemente's death is still open.
