The invitation comes after Harris and other elected officials, including presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott, criticized the new curriculum. Scott, who is also a potential rival to DeSantis in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, stated that there were no silver linings in slavery. Meanwhile, Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker has engaged in a war of words with DeSantis on social media. Pritzker criticized DeSantis for criticizing a new Illinois law that allows non-citizens to serve as police officers. DeSantis argued that citizenship is meaningful and that Illinois is now letting illegal aliens become police officers. The new law, signed by Pritzker last week, faced opposition from Republicans and prominent police groups. Pritzker defended the legislation, stating that it only applied to individuals who are legally allowed to work and possess firearms in the United States. The law will go into effect on January 1, 2024.
