NYC Doctor Commits Horrific Murder-Suicide, Shooting Baby and Herself

03:39 08.08.2023

Prominent New York City oncologist Dr. Krystal Cascetta, 40, shocked the community when she shot and killed her baby before taking her own life in a murder-suicide at her $1 million home in Somers, New York. The incident occurred around 7 am on Saturday, while Cascetta's husband, Tim Talty, was away from the residence. Cascetta, described as a "renowned oncologist" by the New York State Police, worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC as a hematology-oncology specialist.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that Cascetta entered her child's room and shot the baby before turning the gun on herself. The baby's name, age, and gender were not publicly disclosed by the police, but a baby registry suggests that the child was approximately 4.5 months old and a girl. The murder-suicide took place in the couple's home in Somers, where they had recently moved after living in Brooklyn.

Talty, 37, is the founder of Talty Bars, a protein bar company, and Cascetta played a role in advising on the creation of the product due to her medical and science background. The couple married in 2019 and had been described as a nice young family by neighbors. Cascetta, an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, had a passion for her work in medical oncology, inspired by the loss of her mother's best friend to breast cancer when she was in 8th grade.

The news of the murder-suicide has shocked the community of Somers, known for its peaceful atmosphere and close-knit residents. Stuart's Farm, located near Cascetta's residence, was abuzz with emergency vehicles on Saturday morning, leaving the neighbors and local residents devastated. Cascetta's patients also expressed their shock at the tragedy, remembering her as a vibrant and caring doctor who helped them through their cancer journeys.

The Mount Sinai Health System released a statement expressing their deep sympathies to Cascetta's family, friends, colleagues, and patients. The hospital declined to provide further comments. Family members at the home declined to speak on camera but described Cascetta as a wonderful person and expressed their grief over the tragic loss.

As news of the murder-suicide spread, mental health care resources and support were highlighted to provide assistance to those in emotional distress or a suicidal crisis. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline were mentioned as resources for individuals seeking help.

The community of Somers continues to grapple with the shock and sadness caused by the loss of a respected oncologist and the innocent life of a baby. The investigation into the murder-suicide is ongoing, as authorities try to piece together the events that led to this devastating tragedy.
