Tory Lanez Sentenced to 10 Years for Shooting Megan Thee Stallion

17:55 08.08.2023

Canadian musician Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a judge in Los Angeles on Tuesday for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an argument in 2020. The case, which has been highly publicized and generated discussions about violence against Black women, culminated in Lanez being convicted of three felony counts. Prosecutors sought a 13-year sentence, arguing that Lanez lacked remorse and refused to take responsibility for his actions. However, Lanez's lawyers argued for probation, citing mitigating factors such as childhood abuse, philanthropic work, and his relationship with alcohol. During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez fired at her multiple times after an argument, and she accused him of trying to destroy her character and soul. She also revealed that Lanez had privately apologized and offered her and her friend, Kelsey Harris, a million dollars each to keep quiet about the incident. Despite Lanez's defense suggesting that Harris may have been the shooter, she declined to identify Lanez as the gunman. The jury ultimately voted to convict Lanez after seven hours of deliberation. Sentencing was originally scheduled for January but was repeatedly rescheduled as Lanez sought a new trial. The judge denied his request and proceeded with the sentencing hearing. Megan Thee Stallion, who did not attend the sentencing due to her inability to be in the same room as Lanez, provided a written statement expressing the emotional toll the incident had taken on her. She asked the judge to issue a stiff sentence, emphasizing that she had not experienced a single day of peace since the shooting. Lanez's sentencing hearing extended into Tuesday, with the judge considering various factors, including Lanez's charitable giving and the impact of the assault on Megan Thee Stallion. The judge made findings in favor of both sides, leaving the sentence still to be determined.
