Joe Manchin Contemplates Departing Democratic Party

17:00 10.08.2023

In a shocking revelation, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, a prominent Democrat known for his maverick approach, has expressed serious considerations about leaving the party. Manchin, who has been at odds with his party on issues related to the climate crisis and voting rights, spoke candidly about his concerns regarding the Democratic brand. In an interview with West Virginia Metro News show Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval, he expressed his desire for peace of mind and discussed the possibility of running as an independent for Congress or even as a third-party candidate for president.

During the interview, Manchin emphasized that he does not fit the mold of a typical Washington Democrat and has been contemplating leaving the party for quite some time. This independent streak has often brought him into conflict with top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, particularly since the Democrats secured a narrow majority in 2020. With a 51-49 majority, including three independents who caucus with them, Manchin and his colleague Senator Kyrsten Sinema have proven to be thorns in Schumer's side.

Manchin's potential departure from the Democratic Party gained further attention when he appeared with the No Labels group in New Hampshire last month. At the event, he discussed the idea of launching a third-party presidential campaign in 2024, believing that it could pose a significant threat to the two major political parties. He argued that both the Democrats and Republicans had become unfavorable brands and that a third-party candidate could help bring them back to their true essence.

Manchin's influence in the Senate has been notable, as he has utilized his position to push back against policies he opposes while ensuring the passage of bills he supports. His reputation as a conservative Democrat has helped him maintain popularity in West Virginia, a Republican-leaning state that former President Donald Trump won by a large margin in the 2020 election. However, should he decide to spurn his party and run as an independent or third-party candidate, Manchin could face challenges in terms of fundraising and support.

Looking ahead, Manchin is set to face a tough re-election bid next year, with the state's former Democratic-turned-Republican governor, Jim Justice, already campaigning for the Republican nomination to challenge him. As Manchin contemplates his next move, he has kept his options open regarding his party affiliation and electoral plans. If he were to leave the Democratic Party, he would be following in the footsteps of Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who became an independent at the end of last year. Sinema, like Manchin, faces a challenging re-election campaign next year, potentially in a three-way race against a Democrat and a Republican.

Although the prospect of a successful third-party candidacy remains uncertain, Manchin sees it as an opportunity to make a significant impact and bring the traditional parties back to the center. His potential departure from the Democratic Party would undoubtedly have significant implications for the political landscape, particularly in the current highly polarized climate. As Manchin ponders his future, the nation watches with anticipation to see how this influential senator's decision will shape the upcoming elections and the trajectory of American politics.
