Michael Oher reveals truth behind 'Blind Side' adoption and lost earnings

18:50 14.08.2023

Former NFL tackle Michael Oher, whose life story inspired the hit movie "The Blind Side," has filed a petition in a Tennessee court accusing the family who took him in, the Tuohys, of tricking him into signing conservatorship papers instead of adoption papers nearly two decades ago. Oher, now 37 years old and a married father of four, is seeking to terminate the conservatorship and receive a full accounting of the money earned from his name and story. The movie "The Blind Side," released in 2009, earned $300 million at the box office. Since the film's release, Oher has distanced himself from it, claiming it had a negative impact on his NFL career. However, in a 2015 interview, he acknowledged the positive impact the film had on people and how it inspired others. In his personal life, Oher recently married his college sweetheart after dating for 17 years, and the couple has four children together. Oher played eight NFL seasons as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers, winning a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2013. Oher's lawsuit alleges that the Tuohys, in their deal with 20th Century Fox, received a contract price of $225,000 and 2.5% of the film's net proceeds, while Oher received no payment. The film grossed over $300 million. Oher claims that he was led to believe he was being legally adopted by the Tuohys, but instead, they placed him in a conservatorship, granting them control over his contracts and decision-making powers. The court filing alleges that the adoption paperwork was titled as a conservatorship because Oher had turned 18, and he was unaware of the implications of signing the documents. Oher only learned the true nature of the papers in February of this year. The Tuohys have not yet responded to the lawsuit.
