Trump Criticizes Georgia Court and Judge Amid Possible Charges

20:59 15.08.2023

Former US President Donald Trump could potentially face charges in Georgia for his alleged involvement in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, according to a document briefly published on the Fulton County court's website on Monday. The filing, which was later removed, stated that Trump had been charged with conspiracy to commit forgery, racketeering, and false statements. However, the district attorney's office in the state clarified that these charges were not accurate.

The document contained charges that had been anticipated, related to Trump's efforts to find additional votes in Georgia to secure a victory in the state after losing the presidential race to Joe Biden. Prosecutors began presenting their case to a grand jury on Monday, with witnesses expected to testify before the jury, who will then vote on the charges.

If indicted in Georgia, it would be the fourth criminal suit that Trump faces in the US. He has previously been charged with mishandling classified documents, falsifying business records, and his involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn the election results.

In relation to the Georgia case, Trump warned a potential witness, former Lt. Governor of Georgia, Jeff Duncan, not to testify to the grand jury. Trump has escalated his attacks against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, accusing her of interference with his 2024 re-election campaign and attempting to indict him on "ridiculous grounds." Willis has been investigating Trump's actions in Georgia, including his phone call urging the state's top election official to find enough votes for him to win.

Two witnesses who had received subpoenas confirmed that they have been summoned to appear before a grand jury in Atlanta, indicating Willis's intent to seek a criminal indictment in the case.

The judge overseeing Trump's 2020 election subversion case, Tanya Chutkan, recently threatened to expedite the trial if Trump made inflammatory online statements that could taint the jury pool or intimidate potential witnesses. In response, Trump criticized Chutkan, calling her "highly partisan" and stating that the case against him was "VERY BIASED AND UNFAIR!"

Prosecutors have requested the trial to start on January 2, after the 2024 presidential election. Trump faces charges of incitement of insurrection, conspiracy against citizens' rights, obstructing an official proceeding, and conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding in relation to the Capitol riot. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Chutkan refused to issue an order restricting Trump from discussing the case but cautioned him about the potential consequences of his language, suggesting it could lead to a faster trial.
