Ice chunk from sky damages Massachusetts home

13:43 19.08.2023

A Massachusetts home in Shirley became the unlikely target of a large chunk of ice that fell from the sky on Sunday night, causing significant damage to its roof. Homeowners Jeff Ilg and Amelia Rainville were startled by the sudden impact and believed that the ice, estimated to weigh between 15 and 20 pounds, had fallen from an airplane traveling to Boston Logan International Airport. Situated approximately 50 miles northeast of Logan, one of the busiest airports in the country, the couple's home lies directly beneath a flight path.

Recalling the harrowing experience, Ilg described the noise as an explosion or "the loudest pop, bang I've ever heard." The couple initially believed that their house had been struck by lightning when they heard debris rolling down the roof onto a lower section. However, upon investigating the scene, Ilg discovered the massive block of ice on their back step, accompanied by scattered debris throughout the backyard and on the roof.

The impact on the roof left a hole approximately 18 inches to 2 feet in diameter, but the damage was even more extensive inside the house. Ilg and Rainville managed to collect 10 pounds of ice in bags, but there was still plenty of ice scattered around the property. In a state of disbelief, Ilg admitted that the incident was difficult to comprehend, especially considering the clear sky at the time.

An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA aims to determine the cause of the ice chunk's fall and whether it indeed originated from an aircraft. The homeowners, relieved that no one was injured, are awaiting further updates on the investigation. In the meantime, they have taken measures to repair the damage caused by the ice chunk and ensure the safety of their home.

This bizarre event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that aircraft debris can pose to people and property on the ground. The Ilg-Rainville household was fortunate to escape unscathed, but the incident highlights the need for ongoing efforts to prevent such occurrences in the future.
