NBA Launches Inquiry into James Harden's Accusation Against Morey, 76ers

13:44 19.08.2023

The ongoing feud between James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers has caught the attention of the NBA league office. Following Harden's public criticism of 76ers president Daryl Morey, the league has launched an inquiry into the matter. According to ESPN, the NBA is investigating whether Harden's warning of a potential holdout violates the league's collective bargaining agreement or if he was alluding to potential illegal salary cap circumvention by the 76ers.

The controversy began when Harden slammed Morey during a press event in China for Adidas basketball. In a video posted by The Athletic's Shams Charania, Harden called Morey a liar and expressed his refusal to be part of any organization that Morey is a part of. This outburst came shortly after the 76ers reportedly ended trade discussions involving Harden. It is worth noting that Harden had previously requested a trade out of Philadelphia in June.

Behind closed doors, however, Harden has conveyed that his comments were a result of the 76ers' decision to keep him and their expectation that he would start the season with the team. ESPN reports that Harden is disappointed with the lack of a long-term max contract offer from Philadelphia and is now seeking a trade elsewhere. The Los Angeles Clippers are said to be at the top of his wishlist.

Harden's discontent with the 76ers stems from his decision to take a $15 million pay cut last season and decline his $47.4 million player option. He signed a deal that paid him $33 million for the 2022-23 season, expecting to be rewarded with a long-term contract this offseason. However, his hopes have not materialized, leading to his frustration with Morey and the organization.

Harden and Morey have a history together, as they spent eight seasons with the Houston Rockets. Morey was instrumental in bringing Harden to Houston in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012. Their relationship has now soured, with the NBA being drawn into the ongoing drama between the player and the 76ers.

The NBA's inquiry into the matter comes after calls for the league to reinvestigate the 76ers. Sports Illustrated reports that there are allegations of Morey lying to Harden, prompting the league to assess the situation. If the Sixers are found to have made a contractual promise to Harden last summer, which they vehemently deny, they could face league discipline.

In an interview with KHOU in Houston, Harden indicated that he believes it is too late to repair his relationship with the 76ers. He stated that he has been patient all summer but will now focus on what he can control and getting ready for the upcoming season. Rumors of a rift between Harden and Morey had already surfaced in June when he picked up his player option for the 2023-24 season and requested a trade, with the Clippers being his preferred destination.

Both Harden and the 76ers are now facing scrutiny from the NBA. The league is investigating whether Harden's comments violated any rules and regulations, while also assessing the alleged lies by Morey. The outcome of this inquiry could have significant consequences for both parties involved. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will impact the upcoming NBA season and the future of James Harden's career.
