Former President Jimmy Carter, now 98 years old, and his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, are currently in the "final chapter" of their lives, according to their grandson, Josh Carter. In February, the Carter Center released a statement announcing that Jimmy Carter had entered hospice care at his home, choosing to spend his remaining time with his family rather than seeking additional medical intervention after a series of short hospital stays. The family expressed gratitude for the support and concern shown by his many admirers, requesting privacy during this time.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Josh Carter shared his perspective on this stage of his grandparents' lives. He acknowledged that while it is difficult to witness, he finds solace in knowing that they have lived their lives to the fullest. Despite Jimmy Carter's age and tireless public service, Josh Carter affirmed that his grandfather is still "fully Jimmy Carter," although he admitted that the former president is tired. He expressed appreciation for the love and well wishes his grandfather has received and stated that Jimmy Carter fully understands and acknowledges them.

Regarding Rosalynn Carter, Josh Carter revealed that she is suffering from dementia but still recognizes her family to a significant extent. He mentioned that she can still form new memories, emphasizing her resilience. However, he stated that it is likely his grandfather will pass away before his grandmother due to his current hospice care status, explaining that "it's just math."

Reflecting on fond memories, Josh Carter shared the family tradition of gathering every year for New Year's, describing these gatherings as cherished moments. He reminisced about their annual trips and the enjoyment of spending time together as a family. He acknowledged that the roles have now shifted, with the younger generations taking on the responsibility of entertaining their beloved grandparents.

Born in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States. Despite his age and health challenges, he has remained active in his community. He continues to teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, drawing large crowds of visitors who hope to attend his lessons and have photos taken with him and Rosalynn Carter.

Throughout their lives, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have exemplified dedication and service, leaving a lasting impact on the nation and the world. As they navigate the final stage of their lives with their family by their side, their legacy and contributions will continue to be treasured.
