Trump co-defendants surrender in Georgia election case

11:37 22.08.2023

Hall, a Republican poll watcher, has been accused of being involved in a voting systems breach that occurred in Coffee County, Georgia, in early 2021. He faces seven counts, including conspiracy to commit election fraud and conspiracy to defraud the state. His bond was set at $10,000.

Eastman, a conservative attorney known for his role in drafting the so-called "coup memo," surrendered at the Fulton County Jail shortly after Hall. He is accused of playing a key role in a plan to send a fake slate of electors to Congress, with the intention of disrupting and delaying the joint session on January 6, 2021. Eastman faces nine counts, and his bond was set at $100,000.

Both defendants surrendered voluntarily and were booked at the jail, where they were fingerprinted, had their photographs taken, and provided personal information. They are the first to surrender in the sprawling criminal case against Trump and his co-defendants.

Trump himself is expected to turn himself in on Thursday, one day before the deadline set by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. He has not yet entered a plea but has denied any wrongdoing in the case. Trump's lawyers agreed to a $200,000 bond that includes restrictions on his communication with co-defendants and witnesses.

The indictment against Trump and the 18 co-defendants alleges their participation in a "criminal enterprise" aimed at reversing Trump's electoral loss in Georgia. The charges include conspiracy, election fraud, and violation of Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

This is the second indictment against Trump related to the 2020 election, and the fourth criminal charge he has faced this year. He pleaded not guilty in the previous cases and is expected to do the same in the Georgia indictment. The investigation into Trump and his allies' efforts to alter the election results in Georgia began in January 2021, following Trump's request to Georgia's top election official to "find 11,780 votes" to overturn Biden's victory.

The case has drawn significant attention, with Trump accusing Georgia officials of conducting a "witch hunt" to derail his potential re-election bid in 2024. Trump remains the frontrunner for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2024, despite the legal challenges he faces.

The surrender of Hall and Eastman marks a significant development in the case, which has been closely watched by both Trump's supporters and opponents. As the legal proceedings continue, the impact on Trump's political future and the broader implications for the US justice system remain to be seen.
