John Metchie III Overcomes Leukemia to Make NFL Debut

14:44 17.09.2023

John Metchie III's long-awaited NFL debut finally arrived on Sunday as he took the field for the Houston Texans against the Indianapolis Colts. This marked his first regular-season game since being diagnosed with leukemia in 2022. Metchie's return had been further delayed due to a hamstring injury, but he overcame any concerns during practice leading up to the game.

Expressing his excitement, Metchie stated earlier in the week, "I'm extremely excited. But I can't get too ahead of myself. I just have to, like I said, be patient. That's kind of the biggest thing. Although I'm really excited, I got to be patient and ready whenever my number is called." After tearing his ACL in the 2021 SEC title game while playing for Alabama, Metchie still managed to be selected 44th overall in the NFL draft a few months later. However, his journey took another unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in July of that year, ruling out any possibility of playing football last season.

Despite the setback, Metchie remained determined to make a comeback. He was ready for training camp this time around and contributed during the preseason. Finally, on Sunday, he stepped onto the field for his first official snap in a regular-season game. Reflecting on the theme of patience that has defined his journey, Metchie shared with reporters, "Patience has definitely been a theme to me, and it's something I've had a lot of practice within the last year. Of course, it's knowing I have to remain consistent and keep showing up, and time will come. I just have to be ready."

Metchie now joins a Houston receiving corps that includes Nico Collins and Robert Woods. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his happiness at having Metchie back and commended his hard work to regain his fitness. "We'll see where he ends up this week, but happy to have him back out there and we'll see how he progresses throughout the week," Ryans stated.

John Metchie III's road to his NFL debut has been filled with challenges and setbacks. In 2022, shortly after being drafted by the Texans, Metchie received the devastating news of his leukemia diagnosis. Uncertainty loomed over his future in football, and the distance from his family in Canada added to the difficulty. However, Metchie never lost hope, and on Sunday, he will finally take the field for his first regular-season game with the Texans.

Metchie's debut was delayed by a week due to a lingering hamstring injury. Despite the setbacks, he channeled his hesitations into determination, eager to showcase his skills to a rebuilding Texans team. Expressing his excitement, Metchie emphasized the need to remain grounded, stating, "I'm extremely excited, but I can't get too ahead of myself."

Metchie tore his ACL during the 2021 SEC title game while playing for Alabama. Just a few months later, he received the leukemia diagnosis, which forced him to put his football career on hold. In July 2022, Metchie announced his diagnosis and expressed his optimism for a recovery. He acknowledged that football would take a backseat to his health and recovery.

The path back to football began for Metchie in January when he was still undergoing treatment. Despite the challenges, he impressed Texans general manager Nick Caserio, who acknowledged his incredible progress. By August, Metchie felt fully recovered and ready to contribute to the team. Throughout the preseason, he made two catches for 10 yards, leaving a positive impression on head coach DeMeco Ryans.

Metchie's return comes at a crucial time for the Texans, as their offense struggled in their season-opening loss to the Ravens. Alongside receivers Nico Collins and Robert Woods, Metchie will aim to bolster the team's offensive capabilities. Reflecting on his comeback, Metchie expressed his gratitude for being back on the field and contributing to the team.

Overall, John Metchie III's NFL debut signifies a triumphant return from adversity. His resilience and determination have paved the way for his long-awaited return to the football field, providing inspiration to athletes and fans alike.
