UN detains Israeli ambassador in protest against Iranian president's speech

04:10 20.09.2023

During the UN General Assembly, protests erupted as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi delivered a speech, drawing the ire of Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan. Shortly after Erdan left the General Assembly Hall to express his dissent, he was detained by United Nations security personnel. The reason for his detainment remains unclear, but he was later released. Fox News Digital has reached out to the UN for comment.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Erdan described his detainment as unacceptable brutality. Before storming out of the General Assembly Hall, he held up a picture of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who was brutally murdered last year by the country's morality police for not adhering to strict hijab regulations. Amini's murder sparked widespread protests in Iran, which were met with harsh repression. Erdan condemned the UN's "lost moral compass" and criticized their biased treatment towards Israel.

Erdan further emphasized his displeasure with Raisi's presence at the UN, calling him a "vile murderer" and accusing the UN of reaching "a new moral low" by offering him a platform. He expressed frustration that member states would listen to a "mass murderer" while Iranians were suffering under his regime. Erdan called on the international community to denounce and prevent murderers and anti-Semites from speaking at the UN.

Erdan aimed to draw attention to the hypocrisy and moral distortion within the organization that was founded to prevent atrocities. He denounced Raisi for denying and distorting the Holocaust, threatening to annihilate the Jewish people, and perpetuating violence against his own citizens, particularly women and protesters. Erdan wanted to remind the world that Israel supports and stands in solidarity with the people of Iran, despite the lies and propaganda perpetuated by their regime.

During Raisi's speech at the General Assembly, he took shots at the United States, blaming the country for global instability. He criticized certain powers for attempting to incite conflicts using a Cold War mentality, which he believed posed a significant threat to the security and prosperity of nations. Raisi argued against the formation of a new East-West divide.

It is worth noting that former President Trump had previously imposed sanctions on Raisi for his involvement in the massacre of 5,000 Iranian political prisoners in 1988 and the regime's slaughter of 1,500 Iranian demonstrators in 2019.
