Women charged for tossing baby 'like a toy' outside Florida bar

02:09 21.09.2023

In a shocking incident outside Coyote Ugly bar in Daytona Beach, Florida, two intoxicated women have been arrested and charged with child abuse after allegedly tossing a baby back and forth "like a toy". Sierrah Newell, 20, and Brianna Lafoe, 19, were caught on surveillance video engaging in this reprehensible behavior on September 14. Witnesses reported that the women were standing four feet apart, throwing the child and even turning him upside down. The situation escalated further when Lafoe threatened to hit a bystander and proceeded to flip the baby upside down by his ankles. The incident was recorded by a witness, and Daytona Beach Police Department officers reviewed the video, which showed Lafoe swinging the baby up and down over a concrete surface. In the footage, Lafoe can also be seen swinging her hand at someone in the crowd while yelling, "you shouldn't have been filming our baby."

The women involved were found to be underage and intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to the police report. The child, whose relationship to the women has not been disclosed, was immediately taken to a local hospital, where X-rays revealed a possible broken arm. The severity of the child's injuries has not been disclosed.

Surveillance footage from Crazy John's Recreational Cannabis store captured most of the incident, providing a clear view of the disturbing events that unfolded outside the bar. Shawn Knapp, a manager at the store, expressed deep sorrow, stating, "It really breaks your heart to see a little one go through something like that."

The witness who filmed the incident recounted the distressing scene to the police, describing how the highly intoxicated Newell, who was on crutches, threatened bystanders who pleaded with the women to stop abusing the child. The witness reported that Newell began throwing the baby up and down aggressively before approaching the person recording her and allegedly striking her. Lafoe, on the other hand, flipped the baby upside down by his ankles and attempted to hit the woman with one of Newell's crutches.

Following the incident, the baby was taken to Halifax Health, where he was found to have red marks on his back. Further examination, including an X-ray, revealed a mark on his arm that could potentially indicate a broken bone. The child has since been released from the hospital.

Although the identity of the child's parents remains undisclosed, Newell's mother was present at the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation with the Department of Children and Families to determine if she can assume custody of the child.

Lafoe has been charged with battery in addition to child abuse and is currently being held on a $3,500 bond. On the other hand, Newell has reportedly been released. Despite the distressing nature of the incident, bystanders and witnesses played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the child. One witness expressed gratitude for their intervention, stating, "That's what we need in all communities, right? We need people to watch out for each other no matter what age.".
