Prosecutors seek to charge teen arrested in Andreas Probst killing as an adult

03:54 21.09.2023

In a shocking and disturbing incident, a teenage passenger who filmed himself encouraging his friend to intentionally run over a retired police officer riding his bike through Las Vegas has been arrested. The unidentified minor and the teen driver, who was already in custody, are now facing murder charges for the hit-and-run death of 64-year-old Andreas Probst. Las Vegas officials announced the arrests at a press conference, expressing their disgust at the lack of conscience displayed by the young individuals.

According to the police, the passenger filmed the entire horrifying incident, capturing the deliberate act of striking Probst and leaving him for dead. The video shows the driver asking his giggling friend if he is ready, before accelerating directly behind the retired cop. The passenger can be heard encouraging the driver to hit Probst, saying "Yeah, hit his ass." The car plows into Probst, causing him to be thrown onto the windshield and shards of glass to scatter both inside and outside the vehicle. As the driver speeds away, the passenger callously exclaims, "Damn that n-a got knocked out!"

This tragic killing was the most severe crime committed by the pair that morning. Authorities revealed that the teenagers had already struck a 72-year-old man, causing non-life-threatening injuries, and intentionally rammed into another car before targeting Probst. It was discovered that the teens had stolen at least four cars to carry out their violent spree.

The 17-year-old driver was initially arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, but the charge was upgraded to murder once the video evidence came to light. Both teenagers will be tried as adults, and Clark County District Attorney Steve Watson expressed his personal commitment to the case due to his own passion for cycling. He declared that justice will be served.

It took police five weeks to track down the passenger, who wore a mask in surveillance footage. The breakthrough came when a school resource officer received the video footage from a student and alerted the authorities. The second suspect was eventually identified through tattoos, clothing, and other videos.

Andreas Probst's family expressed their belief that the senseless killing was a result of the negative influence of social media on today's youth, rather than any personal vendetta against Probst due to his law enforcement background. Probst, a retired police chief from Bell, California, had moved to Las Vegas after his retirement. His daughter, Taylor, described him as a man of honor and integrity, as well as a loving father and community member.

As news of the arrest broke, the community was left in shock and mourning. Probst's wife, Crystal, called for "outrage in the courtrooms" and emphasized that her husband's death was not just a personal tragedy but a reflection of a larger issue in society. She blamed the national backlash against police and a lack of sufficient punishment for criminals for the senseless crime.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are actively seeking justice for Probst. As the case progresses, the hope is that this horrifying incident will serve as a wake-up call to address the societal issues that may have contributed to such a heinous act.
