Moms of Vegas teens accused of killing retired cop at odds over sons' actions

08:17 22.09.2023

In a shocking turn of events, the teen driver accused of mowing down retired police chief Andreas Probst in a fatal hit-and-run incident has boasted to Las Vegas police about being back on the streets in under a month. The accused, Jesus Ayala, who had just turned 18, allegedly made these claims during his arrest, stating, "You think this juvenile [expletive] is gonna do some [expletive]? I'll be out in 30 days, I'll bet you," according to KLAS. Ayala's audacity and lack of remorse were captured on camera, revealing a disturbing disregard for the crime he had committed.

The incident occurred on August 14 when Ayala, accompanied by his accomplice, 16-year-old Jzamir Keys, deliberately crashed into Probst while the retired police chief was riding his bike. The horrifying video footage shows the stolen Hyundai Elantra striking Probst, leaving him to die on the side of the road. Both Ayala and Keys were arrested, with Ayala confidently proclaiming that the charges against him would be a mere "slap on the wrist."

At the time of Ayala's arrest, he was only facing charges for a warrant and obstructing a peace officer, as the police had not yet informed him about the hit-and-run charges. However, as more evidence emerged, Ayala was hit with 18 charges, including murder, attempted murder, and grand larceny. Ayala and Keys appeared separately in Las Vegas Justice Court, their cases being done separately due to the timing of their arrests. Neither teen spoke during the brief appearances, and they were not asked to enter a plea.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson affirmed that both defendants would be charged with open murder and attempted murder, along with other related charges. Wolfson expressed confidence that the cases would be consolidated, emphasizing the link between the two teens and the severity of their actions. Prosecutors sought high bail, deeming Ayala and Keys a danger to the community.

Keys, who faces three charges, was caught on camera getting into a fight shortly before his arrest, providing additional evidence linking him to the hit-and-run incident. The white tennis shoes he wore in the fight were the same ones seen in the video recorded by Keys in August, capturing the moment of the collision with Probst. In the video, the two teens can be heard callously laughing and saying, "hit his ass."

Probst's widow, Crystal Probst, and daughter, Taylor Probst, attended the court hearing but chose not to speak with reporters afterward. Taylor Probst attributed the senseless killing to the negative influence of social media on youth rather than her father's background in law enforcement. She described her father as a man of honor and integrity, highlighting that his life was cut short by two individuals who did not value the lives of others.

The mothers of Ayala and Keys have spoken out about their sons' actions, displaying contrasting perspectives. Ayala's mother expressed confusion and questioned whether God could forgive her son, while Keys' mother texted a local station, asserting that her son's side of the story would be told, emphasizing the importance of truth amidst media portrayals.

Despite the severity of the crime, the death penalty will not be sought in either case due to Nevada law. However, if convicted before turning 18 years old, Ayala and Keys face 20 years to life in prison. The teens are also accused of engaging in a crime spree on the day of the hit-and-run, including hitting a 72-year-old bicyclist, crashing into a Toyota Corolla, and stealing two more cars before crashing them into each other. The stolen Hyundai Elantra, the vehicle used in the fatal hit-and-run, was found abandoned in a ditch with blood on the windshield, 10 minutes away from the scene of the crime.

The shocking and callous actions of these teens have left the community in disbelief. As the court proceedings progress, the impact of their actions on the victims' families and the community will continue to be felt, highlighting the urgent need to address the influence of social media and its potential consequences on impressionable youth.
