Baltimore Police Hunt for Suspect in Murder of Tech CEO Pava LaPere

22:42 26.09.2023

In a shocking turn of events, 26-year-old Pava Marie LaPere, the CEO of Baltimore-based technology company EcoMap Technologies, was found dead on Monday morning at an apartment complex on West Franklin Street. Authorities discovered signs of blunt-force trauma on LaPere's body after responding to a missing person's call made just before her body was found. Homicide detectives have launched an investigation into her death.

LaPere, who had received a Forbes 30 Under 30 award in the social impact category in 2023, was highly regarded in Baltimore's tech community. She co-founded EcoMap Technologies, a company that specializes in digitizing ecosystems, and was known for her vision and dedication to building an inclusive culture. The news of her death has deeply shaken her colleagues and loved ones.

The prime suspect in LaPere's murder is 32-year-old Jason Dean Billingsley, who had a lengthy criminal record dating back to 2009. Billingsley had previously been convicted of a first-degree forcible sex offense and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2015. However, he was released in October 2022 under the previous administration of State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

The circumstances surrounding Billingsley's release have raised serious questions. Former Washington, D.C., Homicide Detective Ted Williams expressed his disbelief that Billingsley was freed on parole, stating that he would have never recommended it given the individual's criminal history. Mayor Brandon Scott echoed these sentiments, expressing frustration that someone with Billingsley's record was allowed back on the streets.

Baltimore Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley has issued an arrest warrant for Billingsley, charging him with first-degree murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, among other charges. Police have emphasized that Billingsley should be considered armed and dangerous. They have urged residents to be vigilant and report any information about his whereabouts to the authorities.

Following LaPere's tragic death, EcoMap Technologies released a statement on Facebook expressing their deep distress and offering condolences to her family and loved ones. The company highlighted LaPere's commitment to their work, her leadership, and her impact on the Baltimore community. They pledged their unwavering support to her family during this devastating time.

Baltimore is now grappling with the loss of a talented young entrepreneur and the urgent need to bring her killer to justice. The city's business community, in particular, has been deeply affected by the tragedy, as LaPere was seen as a rising star in the tech sector. The search for Jason Dean Billingsley continues, and authorities are determined to ensure that he is held accountable for his alleged crimes.
