MP opens fire on civilian attempting to illegally enter California Marine base

03:21 27.09.2023

In a shocking incident that took place on Friday, a civilian driver gained unauthorized access to the Twentynine Palms, California Marine base, leading to a military police officer firing shots at the vehicle. The driver was eventually detained and arrested, and was immediately transported to a naval hospital for evaluation. According to a report from Military.com, the incident occurred at approximately 8:19 p.m.

The Marine Corps released a statement on Sunday, confirming that the civilian driver attempted to enter the base without authorization. Luckily, the individual was unarmed, and only one Marine MP fired a single shot at the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident, providing a sense of relief for everyone involved.

Twentynine Palms spokesperson Capt. Johnathon Huizar assured the public that their security procedures remained intact despite the breach. He also mentioned that a thorough review of the incident would take place, as is customary after such events. Additionally, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has taken charge of the investigation, although they have not yet commented on the matter in response to a request from Fox News.

It is important to note that the Marine Corps does not believe this unauthorized breach of the installation was an act of terrorism. This reassurance from the authorities helps alleviate concerns and ensures the public that there is no immediate threat to their safety. However, the incident raises questions about the vulnerabilities in the security measures in place at military bases.

Interestingly, this is not the first time a California Marine Corps installation has experienced a breach this year. In January, an unauthorized vehicle attempted to drive past gate security at Camp Pendleton, located southwest of Twentynine Palms. The incident resulted in the closure of the main gate for over two hours as police officers had to erect "final denial barriers" to prevent further unauthorized access. The driver of the vehicle rammed into these barriers, causing the car to catch fire, as detailed in a report from the Washington Examiner.

Although the Marine Corps spokesperson emphasized that the recent incident was not believed to be an act of terrorism, the similarities between the two breaches raise concerns about the overall security preparedness of these military installations. It is crucial for authorities to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of their security protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

As the investigation continues, the public eagerly awaits more information from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Their findings will shed light on how the unauthorized access was possible and what measures can be taken to ensure the safety and security of military bases in the future.
