Commander, Biden's dog, bites Secret Service agent once more

09:01 27.09.2023

In the latest incident involving President Joe Biden's German Shepherd, Commander, the dog has once again attacked a member of the Secret Service. This marks the 11th recorded incident of Commander biting a member of the president's security team. The most recent attack occurred on Monday evening, according to CNN reports.

The Secret Service agent who was bitten received immediate medical treatment on-site and is said to be doing "OK," according to a spokesperson. This incident comes just two months after the Bidens stated that they were actively training Commander to adjust to the unique environment of the White House. Previous reports had indicated that the dog had bitten several bodyguards and that First Lady Jill Biden was struggling to control him.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service communications chief, provided further details about the incident, stating that a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer had come into contact with Commander around 8 p.m. and was subsequently bitten. The officer received prompt medical attention from personnel within the White House compound.

This latest incident adds to a string of documented incidents involving Commander's aggression towards Secret Service officers and agents. In July, nearly 200 pages of redacted federal documents were released, detailing 10 other alleged attacks dating back to October 2022. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained by the victims were reported to be serious.

One particular incident in October 2022 described an unnamed Secret Service officer being charged at by Commander in the presence of First Lady Jill Biden. Despite her efforts, the First Lady was unable to regain control of the dog, prompting concerns that it was only a matter of time before an agent or officer would be attacked or bitten.

In December 2022, another incident occurred where an agent was bitten twice by Commander in the Kennedy Garden of the White House. The dog had been taken off his leash at the time. White House medical personnel treated the agent, who was able to complete his shift. The president expressed concern for the injured officer.

A statement from the first lady's spokesperson, Elizabeth Alexander, acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the First Family to address Commander's behavior and help him navigate the unpredictable nature of the White House grounds. The Bidens expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for their dedication to ensuring the safety of the First Family and the country.

Commander was given to the Bidens as a puppy in December 2021 following the passing of their other German Shepherd, Champ. Major, Biden's other German Shepherd, was also involved in multiple biting incidents at the White House and was subsequently relocated to Delaware to live with friends of the Bidens.
