DeSantis calls out Trump for one-on-one debate

09:41 28.09.2023

In a surprising turn of events, GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has challenged former President Donald Trump to a one-on-one debate, only to be rejected by the Trump campaign. Following the second Republican primary debate, DeSantis wasted no time in suggesting another face-off, this time with the former president. Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity, DeSantis expressed his belief that Trump owed it to the voters to come and make his case. Inspired by his upcoming debate with Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, DeSantis proposed a Hannity-moderated event with Trump.

However, the Trump campaign quickly dismissed DeSantis' idea, with senior adviser Jason Miller harshly criticizing the Florida governor's campaign. Referring to DeSantis as Rob DeSanctimonious and mocking his fifth-place position in the New Hampshire primary, Miller declared that his "pathetic campaign is over." The rejection from the Trump campaign came as no surprise, as Trump had previously opted out of participating in both GOP debates, opting instead to hold a rally in Michigan.

During the debate, DeSantis took the opportunity to criticize both President Biden and Trump, accusing them of being "missing in action." He argued that Biden's absence from leadership was evident, while Trump should have been on the stage defending his record, particularly regarding the national debt and inflation.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie also weighed in, calling out Trump for avoiding the debates. Christie accused Biden of hiding in his basement and criticized Trump for hiding behind the walls of his golf clubs. He argued that both candidates should be present to answer questions and address the concerns of the American people.

DeSantis' challenge to Trump reflects his desire to go head-to-head with the Republican frontrunner. After the crowded nature of the debate stage, Hannity compared it to the forthcoming verbal clash between DeSantis and Newsom. This prompted DeSantis to suggest a debate with Trump instead. However, the Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, dismissed DeSantis' proposal, asserting that they were not as "thirsty and desperate" as DeSantis and Newsom.

Trump's decision to skip the debates is not surprising, given his dominant lead in the polls. With a substantial 42.2 point advantage over DeSantis, Trump has chosen to focus on other campaign activities. During the second debate, he delivered a speech in Detroit, addressing the ongoing United Auto Workers' strike and criticizing Biden for his stance on electric vehicles.

As the race for the Republican nomination intensifies, it remains to be seen how DeSantis will respond to the rejection from the Trump campaign. Will he continue to push for a one-on-one debate, or will he shift his strategy to focus on other aspects of his campaign? Only time will tell.
