Trump Co-Defendant Pleads Guilty in Georgia Election Interference Case

16:59 30.09.2023

Scott Hall, a defendant in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump, pleaded guilty on Friday to misdemeanor charges related to the conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performing election duties. Hall, an Atlanta bail bondsman, is the first defendant to take a plea deal in the case. The charges against him included racketeering and six conspiracy counts, but he pled down to the misdemeanor charges.

Prosecutors accused Hall of attempting to steal sensitive information from Coffee County, Georgia, as part of the plot to overturn Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election. As part of the plea agreement, Hall will receive five years of probation and must testify in future proceedings. He was also fined $5,000, ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, and is prohibited from administering elections in the future. Additionally, Hall must write a letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia and is under a gag order that prevents him from speaking to the press.

While Hall is considered a minor figure in the grand conspiracy alleged by District Attorney Fani Willis, his guilty plea is seen as a win for Willis as she builds her racketeering case against Trump. Hall's attorney, Jeff Weiner, stated that his client's record will be cleared once he completes probation. The plea deal allows Hall to avoid the stress of a felony indictment and the uncertainty of a trial.

Weiner described Hall as a "concerned citizen" who believed Trump's claims of election fraud and took it upon himself to investigate. However, Weiner emphasized that Hall never worked for Trump and has limited knowledge of the larger alleged conspiracy. The indictment describes Hall as an associate of longtime Trump adviser David Bossie.

Hall's charges involve conspiring to unlawfully access voter data and ballot counting machines at the Coffee County Election office on January 7, 2021. The indictment alleges that Hall and his co-defendants conspired to allow others to unlawfully access secure voting equipment and voter data, including ballot images, voting equipment software, and personal vote information.

The Fulton County District Attorney's office has not commented on the plea deal, and Trump's spokesman, Steven Cheung, has not responded to requests for comment. At another hearing on the same day, it was revealed that the district attorney's office planned to offer plea deals to lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, who are also defendants in the case.

Powell faces charges related to a breach of election equipment in Coffee County, where she allegedly hired a computer forensics team to copy data and software from the election equipment without authorization. Chesebro was indicted for his involvement in a plan to have 16 Georgia Republicans falsely declare themselves "duly elected and qualified" electors and declare Trump the winner of the state's 2020 presidential election.

In a separate development, U.S. District Judge Steve Jones denied requests by four other defendants, including former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, to have their charges moved from state court to federal court. Clark is charged with racketeering and criminal attempt to commit false statements.

Overall, Hall's guilty plea marks a significant development in the Georgia election interference case, providing prosecutors with a key witness as they continue to build their case against Trump and his allies. With future proceedings expected, it remains to be seen how Hall's testimony will impact the outcome of the case.
