Rep. Byron Donalds says McCarthy is 'in trouble' after budget deal: 'We didn't get anything'

13:26 01.10.2023

In a recent interview on CNN's "State of the Union," former Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed her advice to Democrats regarding a potential motion to vacate against current Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Pelosi emphasized the importance of following the lead of House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who she believes has done an excellent job. She celebrated their recent victory in the continuing resolution and labeled it a defeat for the "MAGAs."

During the same interview, Pelosi criticized Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, asserting that he holds no influence in the House of Representatives. Gaetz had previously stated his intention to file a motion to vacate against McCarthy's speakership. Pelosi dismissed Gaetz's efforts, claiming that he merely seeks attention and fundraising opportunities.

Adding to the tension within the Republican party, Rep. Byron Donalds from Florida appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and expressed his belief that McCarthy is in trouble following the weekend's last-minute vote to fund the government. Donalds argued that the agreement was a victory for Democrats, as Republicans failed to secure any wins. Although he stopped short of stating his support for a motion to vacate, Donalds acknowledged that there is a deep divide among Republicans in the chamber.

During the interview, host Shannon Bream referenced comments from House Democratic Leader Jeffries, who declared that "the extreme MAGA Republicans have lost." Donalds criticized the funding agreement, claiming that it did not address issues such as border security and government spending. He stressed the importance of securing the border and reducing government spending to combat inflation.

When questioned about McCarthy's status within the Republican caucus, Donalds expressed concerns about the lack of strong leadership and trust issues within the chamber. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding McCarthy's future but did not explicitly state his support for a motion to vacate.

Ultimately, the House voted to fund the government for an additional 45 days, delaying budget negotiations until November. The divisions within the Republican party and the potential motion to vacate against McCarthy's speakership continue to intensify the political landscape in Congress.
