Police are searching for 9-year-old girl abducted from a New York campground

15:02 01.10.2023

A 9-year-old girl named Charlotte Sena went missing during a family camping trip at New York's Moreau Lake State Park. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when Sena decided to go on one last bike ride around the picnicking field by herself. Governor Kathy Hochul, in a press conference on Sunday, shared that Sena wanted to prove that she was "one of the big kids." However, she never returned from her bike ride, causing distress among her family.

When Sena failed to come back within 15 minutes, her family and fellow campers initiated a search. The police were called to the scene at approximately 6:47 p.m. It was discovered that Sena's bike was left behind on Loop A, leading to the involvement of a 100-person search party consisting of state troopers, special ops, forest rangers, park police, and civilian volunteers. The search lasted for a total of 18 hours, during which the police extensively combed the park for any signs of the missing girl.

Despite their efforts, the police could not locate Sena within the park. At 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, an Amber Alert was issued by the police, indicating their concern that Sena may have been abducted while she was alone. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Mazzone stated that his team will continue searching for Sena, with an aquatic search team also deployed to check the nearby waterways. Mazzone assured the public that all available resources are being dedicated to finding the missing girl and bringing her home safely.

Charlotte Sena is described as a white child with blond hair, standing at 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 90 pounds. She was last seen wearing an orange tie-dye Pokemon shirt, dark blue pants, black Crocs, and a gray bike helmet. Officials praised Sena as an intelligent and adventurous fourth-grader who was recently elected for her school's student council.

New York State Police have intensified their efforts to locate the missing girl. They have classified the case as a child abduction, activating an Amber Alert. According to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Mazzone, the exhaustive search conducted by the police led them to believe that it is highly likely that Sena was abducted. The Amber Alert, issued shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, emphasizes the imminent danger of serious harm and/or death that Sena may be facing.

Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the media, expressing her sympathy for Sena's distraught parents, who were camping just 15 minutes away from where the girl and her sisters were raised. Hochul recounted that shortly before her disappearance, Sena had been biking with family friends on Loop A of the park. She had then expressed a desire to do one more loop by herself. Fifteen minutes later, when she hadn't returned, her parents and nearby campers initiated a search and contacted the authorities.

Since the discovery of Sena's missing bike, over 100 personnel and 75 law enforcement officials have been actively involved in the search. The search efforts include the use of tracking dogs, two drones, two boats, and six underwater rescue teams. A command post has been established at the state park, and technology experts have been brought in to analyze other forms of communications in the park during that time.

Governor Hochul assured the public that all resources and efforts are being directed towards finding Charlotte Sena and reuniting her with her family. She expressed her deep empathy for the parents, acknowledging the pain they must be experiencing. Hochul also urged anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed anything to contact 911. She concluded by stating that the entire state of New York is heartbroken and hopes for a reunion that will bring an end to the traumatizing experience for Sena and her family.
