Tragic Avalanche Claims Lives of American Mountaineer and Local Guide in Tibet

18:52 08.10.2023

In a tragic incident on Saturday, American mountaineer Anna Gutu and her Nepalese guide, Mingmar Sherpa, were both confirmed dead after being swept away by an avalanche on Tibet's Mount Shishapangma. The avalanche occurred at an altitude of approximately 25,000 feet, according to Chinese media reports. Sadly, two others, including another American climber, Gina Marie Rzucidlo, and her guide, Tenjen Sherpa, are still missing in the aftermath of the high-altitude tragedy.

The climbing expedition consisted of 52 climbers from various countries, including the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Italy, all aiming to summit Shishapangma, which is the 14th highest peak in the world, standing at an impressive 26,335 feet above sea level. However, disaster struck with not just one, but two avalanches, claiming the lives of Gutu and Mingmar Sherpa.

Karma Gelen Sherpa, another Nepalese guide, was critically injured in the avalanches and had to be carefully escorted down the treacherous mountain before being transported to a nearby hospital. Currently, Sherpa's condition is reported to be stable.

Meanwhile, the search and rescue operation for Rzucidlo and Tenjen Sherpa is still ongoing, as hopes for their safe return fade with each passing moment. The missing Tenjen Sherpa, aged 35, had recently achieved a monumental feat with his partner, Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, by successfully summiting all 14 of the world's tallest peaks in record time earlier this year. Tenjen aspired to become the youngest mountaineer to conquer each of these 14 mountains twice, further showcasing his incredible determination and skill.

The timing of this tragedy is a painful reminder of the risks associated with climbing in the Himalayas, particularly during the month of October, which typically marks the end of the rainy season. As experts have cautioned, climate change has made avalanches more frequent in the region, resulting in the loss of at least 120 lives in the Indian portion of the Himalayas over the past two years.

In response to the incident, climbing activities on Mount Shishapangma have been temporarily suspended due to the current snow conditions. The mountainous terrain remains treacherous, further complicating the ongoing rescue efforts and intensifying the sense of urgency to find Rzucidlo and Tenjen Sherpa.

As the mountaineering community mourns the loss of Gutu and Mingmar Sherpa, the thoughts and prayers of people from around the world are with the missing climbers and their families, hoping for their safe return amidst the devastating circumstances.
