Alex Murdaugh murder case headed back to lower court over jury tampering allegations

00:50 18.10.2023

In a shocking turn of events, the South Carolina Court of Appeals has granted Alex Murdaugh's petition for a new murder trial over allegations of jury tampering. Murdaugh, who was convicted in March for the murder of his wife and son, has been granted the opportunity to lobby a lower court for a fresh trial following the stunning accusations against court clerk Becky Hill.

The decision, which was delivered in a one-page statement, comes after Murdaugh's lawyers, Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian, filed a bombshell motion last month. In their motion, they argued that Hill, an opportunist seeking a book deal and TV appearances, tampered with jurors during the trial. Hill has vehemently denied these allegations.

"We intend to proceed expeditiously and will seek a full-blown evidentiary hearing addressing the serious allegations pertaining to improper jury communications by the Clerk of Court," said Murdaugh's lawyers in a statement responding to the ruling. Judge Clifton Newman, who oversaw the original murder trial, is expected to hold a hearing in the coming weeks to address these allegations.

According to Murdaugh's legal team, Hill advised jurors not to believe Murdaugh's testimony, pressured them to reach a quick guilty verdict, and even lied to the trial judge in an attempt to remove a sympathetic defense juror. The defense lawyers believe that Hill's actions were driven by her desire for personal gain, specifically seeking a book deal and media appearances that hinged on a guilty verdict.

The allegations against Hill are based on interviews conducted with three jurors who came forward after the release of her memoir, "Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders," which was published on August 1. The defense argues that Hill's close relationship with the jurors, particularly the foreperson, was highly inappropriate and influenced the outcome of the trial.

The controversy surrounding the case was further amplified with the airing of the series "The Fall of the House of Murdaugh" on Fox Nation, which included an interview with Hill. The South Carolina State Attorney General's office, the prosecuting body in the murder case, stated that they would respond through the legal process at the appropriate time.

In response to the accusations, Hill has retained attorneys Will Lewis and Justin Bamberg to represent her against the claims of jury tampering. They have yet to comment on the allegations.

While the granting of a new trial provides a glimmer of hope for Murdaugh, it does not mean he will be released from prison. Last month, he pleaded guilty to financial crimes related to stealing millions of dollars from personal injury clients, as well as a settlement for the family of his deceased maid. Murdaugh is currently awaiting sentencing for these crimes, which is expected to result in a lengthy prison term.

The South Carolina Court of Appeals' decision marks the first step in Murdaugh's bid for a new murder trial. Chief Judge H. Bruce Williams signed the order, allowing the case to be sent back to circuit court to consider the allegations of jury tampering. Murdaugh's defense team welcomed the ruling and expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to present their case for a new trial.

The South Carolina Attorney General's office has not yet commented on the recent development, stating that they will respond through the legal process as required.

The case of Alex Murdaugh has garnered national attention due to his prominent family background and the heinous nature of the crimes he is accused of committing. Murdaugh, a former personal injury attorney, comes from a long line of influential figures in the region. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all served as the local prosecutor consecutively for nearly a century.

As the legal proceedings continue, the spotlight will remain on Murdaugh and the allegations of jury tampering. The outcome of the hearing in the coming weeks will determine whether he will have the opportunity for a fresh trial and whether the claims against Becky Hill hold any weight.
