An Arkansas man, identified as 66-year-old Doyle Wayne Whisenhunt, was arrested on Friday evening in connection with an incident at the Oconee Nuclear Station in South Carolina. According to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, Whisenhunt is accused of driving through a fence at the nuclear power station and attempting to hit a security officer with his vehicle. He was taken into custody at an abandoned home in Pickens County. Whisenhunt is facing charges of attempted murder, malicious injury to personal property, unlawful entry into an enclosed place, and hit-and-run from a separate incident.

Authorities located Whisenhunt after finding his abandoned silver 2002 Toyota Camry in the woods. He allegedly abandoned the vehicle on Thursday night and was discovered hiding in an abandoned building on Friday. The Pickens County Sheriff's Office also revealed that Whisenhunt is wanted on drugs and weapons charges in Arkansas.

Sheriff Mike Crenshaw stated during a press briefing that there is currently no evidence to suggest that this incident is a domestic terroristic event. The motive behind Whisenhunt's actions remains unclear.

The incident occurred on Thursday when Whisenhunt drove his Camry through the exit side of the gate at the Oconee Nuclear Station. After hitting the pop-up barricades, he backed the vehicle up and drove down a dirt road. Duke Energy security blocked the vehicle, but Whisenhunt drove through a fence in an attempt to hit the security officers. He then attempted to hit a security truck before driving onto residential property in Pickens County, where shots were fired.

The Oconee Nuclear Station, operated by Duke Energy, is one of the largest nuclear plants in the country with three nuclear reactors. The facility has been in operation since 1973 and has generated over 500 million megawatt hours of electricity. Duke Energy confirmed that the plant is operating safely and that no one was injured during the incident.

Whisenhunt is now facing multiple charges, including trespassing, malicious injury to property, and attempted murder. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are searching for a white male driving a silver 2002 Toyota Camry with an Arkansas license plate. South Carolina, which generates 50% of its electricity from nuclear power, has four nuclear power plants in the state.
