Multiple Banks, Including Bank of America, Experience Deposit Delays Affecting Customers

14:09 06.11.2023

Customers at major U.S. banks, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo, have been experiencing delays with their direct deposits since Friday due to a glitch in payment processing. While Bank of America has not responded to requests for comment, Wells Fargo has referred inquiries to The Clearing House, the only private-sector automated clearing house (ACH) system in the country. The organization mentioned a "processing error with an ACH file" on Friday, according to CNBC. The Federal Reserve clarified that the issue was not related to cybersecurity and had already been resolved. However, on Monday, customers continued reporting delays in their direct deposits, prompting them to reach out to their banks on social media. JPMorgan Chase assured that it would post scheduled direct deposits to customer accounts as soon as possible and promised to refund any overdraft fees resulting from the ACH problem.

DownDetector also revealed an increase in problems for Bank of America customers, including difficulties with funds transfers and online banking. Similarly, customers at other large banks like Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank reported ongoing issues on Monday, such as troubles accessing account balances or performing other transactions.

Customers took to social media to express their frustration. One Twitter user, Steve Nickman, tagged the Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, asking what could be done to protect timely receipt of his direct deposit paycheck. He accused Bank of America of non-compliance with regulations, which was negatively impacting Texas customers. Another Twitter user, Jay, criticized Bank of America's online bill pay system, which had been down for days. He suggested it might be time to find a new bank. Another user expressed disbelief at the lack of communication and transparency from Bank of America, stating that it had been four days without a direct deposit and no update or resolution in sight.

Wells Fargo and Deloitte were also affected by unspecified technical issues on Friday. Bank of America warned its customers about potential deposit delays due to an issue impacting multiple financial institutions. The bank assured customers that their accounts remained secure and that no action was required on their part. Wells Fargo acknowledged the technical issues on its official customer help account on X, apologizing for any inconvenience caused and assuring customers that they were working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. The Independent reported that Deloitte, a consultancy firm, also experienced problems. Downdetector indicated that other institutions, including US Bank, Truist, and Chase, were affected by unknown outages. Some Chase customers expressed concerns online about late deposits.

The Federal Reserve informed banks that the problem was caused by a "processing issue" at the private sector operator of the ACH. The delay resulted from an error in a batch of payments, disrupting the processing of transactions. The Clearing House, the private sector operator of ACH, confirmed the processing issue and attributed it to a "manual error" rather than a cybersecurity breach. The organization is working with impacted financial institutions to resolve the matter, but there is currently no update on when the problem will be completely resolved.
