Trump plans sweeping undocumented immigrant roundups, detention camps, New York Times reports

22:37 11.11.2023

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to expand his immigration crackdown if he is re-elected in 2024. According to The New York Times, Trump's second-term immigration policies would include sweeping roundups of people who would be held in large camps while awaiting deportation. This plan, described as "an assault on immigration on a scale unseen in modern American history," aims to deport millions of people every year, including long-time residents of the United States.

The report is based on interviews with several advisers, including Stephen Miller, who oversaw Trump's first-term immigration policies. Miller revealed that Trump plans to bring back his ban on the entry of people from certain Muslim-majority countries. Additionally, he would revive other hardline policies, such as rejecting asylum claims based on assertions that migrants carry other infectious diseases, not just COVID-19.

To facilitate the sweeping roundups of undocumented people, Trump would reassign federal agents and deputize local police and National Guard troops volunteered by Republican-run states. He would also build large camps to hold detainees while their cases are processed for deportation. Trump plans to redirect Pentagon funds to finance this massive operation if Congress refuses to approve it, similar to his approach with the border wall during his first term.

During a September rally, Trump hinted at his plan, stating that he would conduct "the largest domestic deportation operation in American history" following the "Eisenhower model." This refers to a 1954 campaign called Operation Wetback, which was targeted at Mexican immigrants.

Other parts of Trump's immigration plan include screening visa applicants for ideological views, revoking the temporary protected status of people from certain countries, and attempting to end birthright citizenship for babies born in the United States to undocumented parents.

The Biden-Harris campaign has strongly condemned Trump's immigration plans, describing them as "extreme, racist, and cruel policies." They believe these policies are meant to stoke fear and divide the American nation, hoping that a scared population will support Trump's re-election.

It is important to note that these plans will face significant legal challenges. However, with a Republican majority in the Supreme Court, Trump would have a favorable position to push through controversial measures. Tom Homan, who ran the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the Trump administration, recently met with Trump and expressed his willingness to help organize and run the largest deportation operation in the country's history.

Overall, Trump's proposed immigration policies for his second term are aimed at intensifying his first-term crackdown and deporting millions of people every year. These policies include the resurrection of the ban on certain Muslim-majority countries, sweeping roundups of undocumented people, and the establishment of large camps to hold detainees awaiting deportation.
