Lawmaker George Santos indicted on fraud charges faces House expulsion vote

07:10 01.12.2023

House of Representatives may come to an end on Friday as the chamber prepares to vote on a resolution to expel him. Santos, a freshman congressman from New York, has been embroiled in controversy since it was revealed that he had fabricated or exaggerated parts of his biography. The situation escalated when federal investigators charged him with fraud, money laundering, and other crimes in May. The House Ethics Committee released a damning report earlier this month, stating that there was "substantial evidence" to support the allegations against Santos.

If the resolution to expel Santos is successful, he would become just the sixth House member in U.S. history to be expelled and the first in over 20 years. The last expulsion occurred in 2002 when James Traficant was removed from office after being convicted of 10 corruption-related felonies. The House debated the resolution on Thursday and is scheduled to vote on Friday morning.

Santos' potential expulsion has divided lawmakers, with some Republicans expressing concerns about the party's already slim majority in the House and reservations about removing Santos before he has been convicted of a crime. Santos himself has defiantly stated that he would wear his expulsion "like a badge of honor" and criticized the lack of due process in the proceedings.

The House Ethics Committee report on Santos' alleged wrongdoing paints a damning picture of his conduct. The 56-page report details a wide range of alleged misconduct, including stealing money from his campaign, reporting fictitious loans, deceiving donors, and engaging in fraudulent business dealings. According to investigators, Santos used campaign and business funds to pay for personal expenses, such as Botox injections and luxury purchases. He also allegedly made unauthorized charges on his campaign donors' credit cards, falsified campaign finance reports, and engaged in money laundering.

The report also highlights Santos' repeated misrepresentations and lack of transparency, both during his campaign and while in office. Investigators allege that Santos sustained his misconduct through a constant series of lies to his constituents, donors, and staff. They also claim that Santos ignored his staff's warnings about issues with his campaign's finances and was actively involved in the campaign's day-to-day financial affairs.

This is the third attempt by the House to expel Santos since May. The first attempt was blocked by Republicans, who referred the matter to the Ethics Committee. The second attempt fell short of the two-thirds majority required to oust a member, as many lawmakers withheld support for punishing Santos while the Ethics Committee investigation and his criminal trial were ongoing. However, the release of the committee's report has prompted renewed calls for expulsion, with lawmakers from both parties embracing the idea.

Santos is set to address the public on Thursday as the House prepares to vote on his expulsion. It remains unclear what Santos will say during his press conference, but he has previously resisted pressure to step down from Congress and has accused his colleagues of engaging in their own misconduct. A vote on expelling Santos could happen as soon as Thursday, posing a significant threat to his congressional career.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Santos has remained defiant and has refused to resign. He has pleaded not guilty to all 23 federal charges he now faces and his criminal trial is set to begin in September. Santos has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2024.
