Bills GM says edge rusher Von Miller to practice and play while facing domestic violence charge

15:08 06.12.2023

Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane addressed the allegations of domestic violence made against star linebacker Von Miller during a press conference on Wednesday. Beane expressed his disappointment in the accusations but emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold before making any judgments. Despite the ongoing investigation, Beane confirmed that Miller will participate in practice and is expected to play in the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Miller turned himself in to police in a Dallas suburb after being charged with third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman, who is the mother of his children. The charge carries a potential sentence of 2 to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Miller posted a $5,000 bond and is currently free.

Beane acknowledged that no one wants their name associated with such serious allegations, but he urged patience and respect for due process. He compared the situation to one that could happen to anyone and stressed the importance of waiting for all the facts to emerge before rushing to judgment.

The Bills organization is following the NFL's lead in treating the allegations seriously. Beane noted that the accusations seemed "out of character" for Miller, whom he has known for the past year and a half since signing him in free agency.

In Dallas, the district attorney's office provided no updates on the investigation. According to a police affidavit, Miller allegedly assaulted the woman by putting his hands on her neck, pulling out her hair, and throwing her onto a couch. The woman suffered minor injuries, including bruising on her neck.

Bills coach Sean McDermott confirmed that Miller would not practice on Wednesday but would participate fully on Thursday as part of a previously arranged plan. McDermott emphasized the severity of the situation and left the discussion on the matter to Beane, who spoke on behalf of the team.

Beane revealed that he had spoken with Miller and his representatives about the incident but preferred to keep the details of those conversations private. He assured reporters that he had also been in contact with the NFL, and he did not anticipate Commissioner Roger Goodell placing Miller on the exempt list.

The NFL issued a statement stating that it is gathering information and monitoring all legal developments. Typically, players are not placed on the commissioner's exempt list until formal charges are filed or when the league's investigation concludes a potential violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

The woman involved in the incident provided evidence of her pregnancy, including a positive test and a text conversation with Miller discussing the due date and a doctor's visit. Miller allegedly destroyed her laptop and physically assaulted her before leaving when she threatened to call the police. The woman claimed to have recorded some of the attack.

Miller, a highly accomplished player, holds the NFL's active sack leader record with 123 1/2 sacks. He was selected as the second overall pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2011 NFL draft and has since become a three-time All-Pro and an eight-time Pro Bowl selection. He won two Super Bowl championships, one with the Broncos in 2015 and another with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

Born in DeSoto, Texas, Miller attended Texas A&M University, where he was a two-time first-team All-American. He holds the Broncos' career record in sacks with 110 1/2.
