Home Alone' actor launches GoFundMe to pay for cancer surgery

00:02 12.12.2023

Actor Ken Hudson Campbell, known for his role as Santa in the 1990 classic "Home Alone," has been diagnosed with cancer and is in need of surgery. His daughter, Michaela, started a GoFundMe page to help fund his medical expenses, with a goal of $100,000. The outpouring of support from fans and even some famous faces has been overwhelming. Steve Carell, Jeff Garlin, Tim Meadows, and "Big Bang Theory" co-creator Bill Prady all donated to the fund, with Carell giving the generous amount of $10,000.

Ken Hudson Campbell's cancer diagnosis came on October 27th, when it was discovered that a tumor had grown on the bottom of his mouth, encroaching on his teeth. He underwent a 10-hour surgery on December 7th, where the tumor was successfully removed and his jaw bone was reconstructed using his fibula. Despite swelling and incisions, he is recovering well.

Michaela, Campbell's daughter, expressed her gratitude for the support her family has received. She shared that her father was emotionally overwhelmed by the love and generosity shown by everyone. This support has taken a significant amount of stress off their financial burdens, as the family has been struggling for some time.

Campbell's successful surgery has the potential to help him return to Hollywood, where he has had notable roles in films such as Groundhog Day and "Armageddon." However, the procedure may affect his ability to work as an actor in the future. Michaela hopes that the time ahead will allow her father to regain his health and spend more time with family and friends.

The GoFundMe campaign aims to cover various expenses, including physical and speech therapy, medical equipment, dental implants, and caregivers. With over $84,000 raised so far, the family is well on their way to reaching their goal of $100,000. The overwhelming support from fans and famous friends has been a source of hope and encouragement during this challenging time.

Ken Hudson Campbell's role in Home Alone as Santa Claus is one of his most memorable performances. In a standout scene with Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin McAllister, Campbell's Santa nearly loses his fake beard and is seen smoking as he leaves work. Kevin approaches him, asking for his "family back" for the holidays. While initially confused, Campbell's Santa gives him some Tic Tacs after their exchange. The actor's comedic timing and memorable delivery in this scene have become a beloved part of the film.

As the news of Campbell's diagnosis spreads, the entertainment industry has shown its support. Macaulay Culkin recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was joined by his onscreen mom from "Home Alone," Catherine O'Hara, who gave a speech. Campbell's situation serves as a reminder of the lasting impact that films like Home Alone have on both the actors involved and the fans who cherish them.
