TV sitcom 'Extended Family' taken from real-life relationship of Celtics owner, wife and her ex

"Extended Family," a new sitcom premiering on NBC, takes inspiration from the real-life family dynamics of Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, his wife Emilia Fazzalari, and her ex-husband George Geyer. The show, created by Grousbeck's friend and TV veteran Tom Werner, revolves around a love triangle between the characters played by Jon Cryer, Donald Faison, and Abigail Spencer.

The premise of the show centers around the decision by Fazzalari and Geyer to follow an arrangement called nesting after their divorce. Instead of making their children experience the disruption of custody swaps, the parents move in and out of the family apartment while the kids stay put. This unique approach aims to minimize the disruption in their children's lives.

However, everything changes when Fazzalari starts dating Grousbeck, the owner of the Boston Celtics. The show highlights the mixed emotions Geyer experiences as a lifelong Celtics fan, growing up in Boston, and now having his ex-wife married to the team's owner. The characters banter in a similar fashion to Grousbeck, Fazzalari, and Geyer in real life, bringing a touch of authenticity to the show.

While some elements of the show are taken from their lives, most of the stories are created in the writer's room, where Geyer contributes as a part-time writer. Werner, who has experience with hit shows like "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne," was sold on the idea when he overheard Fazzalari laughing on the phone with Geyer while on vacation with them in Mexico. He saw the potential for a sitcom and offered them guidance during the development of the show.

The cast of Extended Family includes veteran actor and Boston sports fan Mike O'Malley as the showrunner and comedian Lenny Clarke, known for his authentic Boston accent, as Jim's father. Former Celtics player Rick Fox also makes an appearance as the team's general manager. The show has been picked up for 13 episodes and is set to move into a regular timeslot on Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET, starting January 2nd.

The Celtics' name and other NBA intellectual property are used in the show to maintain authenticity. External shots of the TD Garden, the Celtics' home arena, and scenes in a luxury suite adorned with framed jerseys add to the realism. Grousbeck stated that the NBA approved the use of their branding for the show.

The pilot of Extended Family was filmed during the 2022 NBA Finals, coinciding with Grousbeck and Fazzalari's visit to California to watch the Celtics play against the Golden State Warriors. Grousbeck described the surreal experience of watching actors portray loose versions of themselves on television, saying it felt like stepping into another world.

Overall, Extended Family blends real-life family dynamics with comedy and sports fandom, providing a unique and entertaining look into the lives of a Boston Celtics owner, his wife, and her ex-husband.
