House Democrat criticizes Maine's removal of Trump from ballot

01:45 31.12.2023

In a shocking turn of events, the home of Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows was targeted in a dangerous swatting incident on Friday evening, as confirmed by the Maine State Police on Saturday. The incident occurred after an unidentified individual falsely claimed to have broken into Bellows' house. Fortunately, Bellows and her family were not present at the time of the hoax call. This disturbing incident follows Bellows' decision to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the state's 2024 Republican presidential primary ballot, which she announced late Thursday. Bellows cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits individuals who have "engaged in insurrection" from holding office, in response to challenges raised by state residents, including a bipartisan group of former lawmakers.

"Swatting," a dangerous act where individuals make false calls to the police to provoke a law enforcement response, particularly involving SWAT teams, has become a concerning trend. Some swatting incidents have tragically resulted in the loss of innocent lives. In 2019, an Ohio man was sentenced to prison after a Kansas man he swatted was accidentally killed by the police. The gravity of these incidents cannot be understated.

Following the swatting incident, Bellows took to Facebook to express her gratitude for the outpouring of support she received. She condemned the swatting call as unacceptable and expressed her appreciation for the unwavering support from her incredible team at the Department of Secretary of State, as well as law enforcement agencies. Bellows also revealed that her staff had faced relentless threatening communications on Friday, emphasizing the attempt to intimidate not only her but also others into silence.

Maine State Police promptly responded to Bellows' request to investigate her home, ensuring the safety of her residence. Fortunately, no suspicious activity was discovered. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities diligently working to identify and apprehend the individual responsible.

This swatting incident is not an isolated event, as it follows similar attacks targeting Republican U.S. Representatives Brandon Williams of New York and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia on Christmas Day. Additionally, Republican state Representative Kevin D. Miller of Ohio reported being swatted on Tuesday. These incidents highlight a concerning pattern of targeted harassment against public figures.

Meanwhile, Democratic House lawmaker Jared Golden from Maine has voiced his criticism of the decision to remove Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot. Golden, who voted to impeach Trump for his alleged role in the January 6th insurrection, believes that until Trump is proven guilty of the crime of insurrection, he should be allowed on the ballot. Golden's stance reflects his belief in upholding the principles of due process and the presumption of innocence.

Bellows' decision to disqualify Trump from the primary ballot has sparked a unified response from the Republican Party, with both Trump's allies and rivals rallying behind him. While national Democrats have largely remained silent on the matter, some have applauded Bellows' decision, citing the clear language of the 14th Amendment and condemning Trump's alleged incitement of the January 6th riot as a violation of the Constitution.

As the investigation into the swatting incident continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers public officials face in carrying out their duties. This incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and security of those who serve the public, as well as the need to address the growing issue of swatting to prevent further harm and loss of life.
