12:31 31.12.2023

An off-duty police sergeant from the Greensboro Police Department in North Carolina was tragically shot and killed while attempting to confront suspects involved in a crime at a gas station on Saturday. The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. at a Sheetz location in the community of Colfax. According to Chief John Thompson, the veteran officer had witnessed a crime taking place and immediately took action.

As the officer approached the suspects, he was shot, leading to his critical injuries. Authorities released an alert on Saturday night, stating that they were searching for a black Chevrolet Equinox in connection with the incident. However, the alert was later canceled, and it remains unclear if the suspects have been apprehended. The police are currently conducting an active and ongoing homicide investigation.

The fallen officer, whose identity has not been disclosed to respect the privacy of his family, received immediate medical attention from another off-duty officer present at the scene, as well as a paramedic. He was then transported to a local medical facility, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Chief Thompson described the officer as a loving husband, father, son, and brother, who had dedicated 22 years of his life to the Greensboro Police Department.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed his condolences and offered his support in bringing the suspects to justice. Cooper stated that he had spoken with Chief Thompson, assuring him that all available state resources would be utilized in the investigation. He emphasized the importance of apprehending those responsible for this senseless act of violence.

Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan also addressed the devastating incident, calling it one of the most challenging situations she has faced during her tenure. She acknowledged that words could not provide comfort to the officer's family or fellow officers. Vaughan emphasized the need to remember that this was a senseless act of violence that must be addressed.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, are assisting in the investigation. The community and law enforcement community are rallying together, offering prayers and support to the fallen officer's family and colleagues. As the investigation progresses, authorities are determined to bring justice to this tragic situation.
