Shohei Ohtani, basketball star wife Mamiko Tanaka arrive in South Korea for MLB opener

A bomb threat against Los Angeles Dodgers' star Shohei Ohtani prompted a massive investigation in South Korea as the team prepared for their first game of the season in the Seoul Series. The threat, received via email by the country's consulate general in Vancouver, Canada, specifically targeted Ohtani and threatened to detonate an explosion during Wednesday's game at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. Nearly 150 police officers, along with sniffer dogs, X-ray detectors, and other equipment, were deployed to search the stadium. The sender of the email claimed to be a Japanese lawyer, but police suspect it may be the same person who has sent similar threats in the past.

Despite the bomb threat, MLB released a statement emphasizing the safety and security of all involved, with 350 officers set to be active for the start of the game. The game, which marks the first official MLB game in South Korea, is highly anticipated as Ohtani makes his Dodgers debut after signing a historic $700 million contract. The opener will see Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow facing off against Padres ace Yu Darvish in a clash of NL West rivals.

In the midst of the investigation and preparations for the game, Ohtani arrived in South Korea with his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, who was revealed to be a Japanese basketball player. The couple was greeted by fans wearing Dodgers jerseys, holding up signs of support. Ohtani, known for his private nature, lightly acknowledged the fans with a smile and a wave. The Dodgers, along with Ohtani, are considered favorites to win the World Series this season after a high-profile offseason that included the signing of Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The game against the Padres is set to take place at Gocheok Sky Dome on Wednesday at 6:05 a.m. ET.
