Judge denies bond for drunk driver accused of killing newlywed bride

12:55 02.08.2023

In a tragic incident that occurred on April 28, a bride named Samantha Miller lost her life after being involved in a collision with a drunk driver. Jamie Lee Komoroski, 25, was charged with reckless vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death or great bodily injury. Komoroski appeared in court via video from the Charleston County Detention Center, where she burst into tears after Judge Michael Nettles denied her release on bond, citing her as a flight risk.

During the hearing, relatives of Samantha Miller, including her mother Lisa, expressed their grief and anger towards Komoroski. Lisa tearfully stated, "She didn't just kill my child. She killed all of us." The court heard that Komoroski was driving her Toyota Camry at twice the speed limit on a quiet Folly Beach road when she crashed into a golf cart carrying Miller, her new husband Aric Hutchinson, and two relatives from their nearby wedding reception. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene, while Hutchinson and the two others sustained serious injuries.

Komoroski's attorneys had requested a $100,000 bond, with the condition that she would attend a substance abuse rehab program before being released to her mother's supervision. They argued that Komoroski had no criminal history and posed no threat to public safety. However, Judge Nettles denied their request, expressing his belief that she was a flight risk. He did, however, set a deadline for her trial in March 2024. If the case is not heard by that time, Komoroski could be released on a $150,000 surety bond and placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring.

Komoroski's case has gained significant attention since the incident, with many expressing their condolences for the loss of Samantha Miller and the grief experienced by her husband and family. Aric Hutchinson has filed a wrongful death suit against Komoroski and several bars and restaurants, alleging that they served her alcohol despite her visible intoxication. Komoroski's former employer, Taco Boy, and her unnamed boss are also named in the lawsuit for allegedly pressuring her to drink alcohol beyond the point of visible intoxication.

The tragic death of Samantha Miller has left a community in mourning and a family devastated. The court's decision to deny bond to Jamie Lee Komoroski reflects the severity of the charges against her and the potential danger she poses. As the case moves forward, the hope is that justice will be served for the loss of a young woman's life on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.
