Trump Meddler Matthew DePerno Charged in Election Breach

12:31 02.08.2023

Matthew DePerno, a prominent figure in former President Donald J. Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Michigan, has been arraigned on Tuesday on four felony charges. The charges, including undue possession of a voting machine and conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a computer system, were revealed by D.J. Hilson, the special prosecutor overseeing the investigation.

DePerno's involvement in the effort to overturn the election in Michigan stems from his belief that the state played a crucial role in securing President Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s victory. Former State Representative Daire Rendon has also been charged with two crimes, including conspiracy to illegally obtain a voting machine and false pretenses. Both DePerno and Rendon appeared remotely before Chief Judge Jeffery Matis and were released on bond.

DePerno has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that his efforts aimed to expose significant security flaws in the election process. In a statement released by his lawyer, Paul Stablein, DePerno maintained his innocence, claiming that the charges against him were politically motivated rather than based on evidence.

While the criminal investigation in Michigan has been somewhat overshadowed by developments in Georgia, where a grand jury is also examining election-related matters, both cases are part of the ongoing reckoning over the conspiracy theories propagated by Trump and his allies regarding election machines. These efforts to legitimize falsehoods and conspiracy theories have persisted even after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and President Biden's assumption of office.

The state of Arizona has also witnessed similar efforts, including the controversial audit led by Republicans in the state legislature. In response to the charges against DePerno and Rendon, Special Prosecutor D.J. Hilson stated that his office had made no recommendations to the grand jury but would prosecute the cases as directed by the grand jury in the interest of justice.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat who defeated DePerno in the November election, distanced herself from the ongoing investigation since the appointment of a special prosecutor in August of last year. In a statement, Nessel condemned the allegations, emphasizing the harm they caused to democracy. She also issued a warning for the future, expressing concerns about the lies propagated by attorneys involved in the matter and those who collaborated with them nationwide. Nessel called for swift justice in the courts.

The charges against DePerno and Rendon are the result of a peculiar plot devised by a group of conservative activists in early 2021. Their plan aimed to dismantle the voting system and cast doubts on its integrity. The charges brought against them underscore the seriousness with which the authorities are treating attempts to undermine the democratic process.
