Trump Ally Matthew DePerno Faces Charges in Election Breach

17:04 03.08.2023

In a significant development in the ongoing investigations surrounding the 2020 election, Matthew DePerno, a prominent figure in former President Donald J. Trump's attempts to overturn the election results in Michigan, was arraigned on Tuesday on four felony charges. The charges against DePerno include undue possession of a voting machine and conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a computer system, as revealed by the special prosecutor overseeing the case, D.J. Hilson.

DePerno's involvement in the effort to overturn the election in Michigan stemmed from his belief that the state played a crucial role in securing President Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s victory. However, his actions have now landed him in legal trouble. Former State Representative Daire Rendon has also been charged with two crimes, including conspiracy to illegally obtain a voting machine and false pretenses.

Both DePerno and Rendon appeared remotely before Chief Judge Jeffery Matis, who subsequently released them on bond. While DePerno has maintained his innocence, claiming that his efforts aimed to expose significant security flaws in the election process, his lawyer, Paul Stablein, released a statement alleging that the charges against DePerno were politically motivated rather than evidence-based.

The ongoing criminal investigation in Michigan, although somewhat overshadowed by developments in Georgia, where a grand jury is also examining election-related matters, is part of the broader reckoning over the conspiracy theories propagated by Trump and his allies concerning election machines. These efforts to legitimize falsehoods and conspiracy theories have persisted even after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and President Biden's assumption of office. Arizona has also witnessed similar endeavors, including a controversial audit led by Republicans in the state legislature.

In response to the charges against DePerno and Rendon, Special Prosecutor D.J. Hilson stated that his office had made no recommendations to the grand jury but would prosecute the cases as directed by the grand jury in the interest of justice. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat who defeated DePerno in the November election, distanced herself from the ongoing investigation since the appointment of a special prosecutor in August of last year. Nessel condemned the allegations in a statement, emphasizing the harm they caused to democracy. She also expressed concerns about the lies propagated by attorneys involved in the matter and those who collaborated with them nationwide, issuing a warning for the future and calling for swift justice in the courts.

The charges against DePerno and Rendon shed light on a peculiar plot devised by a group of conservative activists in early 2021. Their plan aimed to dismantle the voting system and cast doubts on its integrity, ultimately undermining the democratic process. Authorities are treating these attempts seriously, as evidenced by the charges brought against them. As the investigations in Michigan and Georgia continue to unfold, the nation grapples with the repercussions of the baseless claims and conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 election.
