Zach Wilson Shines in Jets' Short Start at Hall of Fame Game

01:45 04.08.2023

In a highly anticipated matchup, the New York Jets faced off against the Cleveland Browns in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The game marked the return of Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, who played the first quarter before being replaced by Tim Boyle.

Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is adjusting to his role as Aaron Rodgers' backup. Despite playing in a preseason game surrounded by players fighting for roster spots, Wilson provided a highlight with a 57-yard pass to Malik Taylor on the Jets' second series. The impressive throw set up a 54-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein.

However, Wilson's night was relatively quiet outside of that big play. He completed 3-of-5 passes for a total of 65 yards, with his other two completions totaling just eight yards. Wilson's outing showcased his potential, but also highlighted his need for further improvement.

On the other side of the field, the Browns' fifth-round pick, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, stole the show. In the third quarter, the lights at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium briefly went out, causing a delay. When play resumed, Thompson-Robinson led a 10-play, 78-yard touchdown drive, culminating in a 22-yard pass to Austin Watkins. Thompson-Robinson also showcased his speed, rushing for 37 yards on five carries.

The Browns' quarterback competition between Thompson-Robinson and Kellen Mond, the Minnesota Vikings' third-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, was on display during the game. Mond started for the Browns and finished the night 13-of-19 with one touchdown and one interception.

Despite the Browns' strong showing, the Jets were the first team to score in the game. Rookie running back Israel Abanikanda found the end zone with a burst of speed, giving the Jets a 13-0 lead. The Browns responded with a touchdown of their own before halftime, as Mond connected with John Kelly on a three-yard pass to make it 13-7.

The game also featured standout performances from Demetric Felton, who rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown, and Jets' first-round pick Will McDonald IV, who made key tackles on defense.

For Wilson, this game marked an opportunity to showcase his growth and development under the guidance of Rodgers. Head coach Robert Saleh expressed confidence in Wilson's progress, noting his decisiveness and comfort on the field. Wilson's tenure with the Jets has been marked by ups and downs, but he appears determined to learn from his past mistakes and embrace the opportunity to learn from Rodgers.

As the Jets and Browns kicked off the 2023 preseason, both teams showed signs of rust, with missed field goals and punts early in the game. However, Zuerlein's strong leg helped the Jets secure points with two field goals in the first quarter.

In the end, the Browns emerged victorious with a final score of 21-16, thanks in part to Thompson-Robinson's impressive performance and Bubba Bolden's late interception.

While it may only be the first game of the year, the Hall of Fame Game provided valuable insights into the progress and potential of both teams. As the preseason continues, all eyes will be on Wilson as he looks to prove himself as Rodgers' capable backup and lead the Jets to success in the upcoming season.
